I find it completely unbelievable that anyone would think guitar hero is harder or anywhere near as hard as actual guitar/bass. You "beat" the game in a couple months, whereas being able to get anywhere NEAR playing those songs on actual guitar (from scratch) would take years for some.
Of course it will be harder for existing guitarists/bassists to ADAPT to 5 buttons, but that's because you're trying to change what has become natural to you.
When people tell me guitar hero is harder than actual guitar, I laugh. Idiots will be idiots and it's unfortunate they don't get to appreciate true talent, musical inspiration, and hard work from serious guitarists/bassists. But that's fine, they'll probably go put on some awesome "music" on their newest rap CD. Great guitar on those, I hear. |

As others have mentioned, Guitar Hero has a much lower learning curve than real guitar, which allows people to get pretty good at it pretty fast. However, even there are some songs that even the best players will never, ever be able to play perfectly. I'm not sure what that can be attributed to, but it's probably some difference in the guitar controller vs. a real guitar and the guitar controller is just more limited somehow.
Real guitar is much harder to learn, of course, because it's just not quite so intuitive. However, I believe that with a lot of practice, just about any song can be played perfectly by anyone, whereas I don't think that's the case with Guitar Hero. |

Maybe flicking the pad or the fake whammy bar too. Actually playing a song to perfection requires more things than I care to list, but including picking technique, vibrato, bends, etc. etc. etc etc. Guitar/bass is 100000000000000000000x more than playing the notes in the right order, but few seem to understand that any more. |

It's a ******* video game. I've played bass longer than most people on this board have been alive. And, I still enjoy playing Guitar Hero.
Get off your damn high horse and let people enjoy playing a damn game.
Obviously, anyone who says Guitar Hero is harder than a real guitar has never played a real guitar. Therefore, they are also idiots. But, I actually have more disdain for someone who asks the stupid question of "Why not buy a real guitar?" |

In one sense, Guitar Hero IS harder, because hitting all the notes in a song, especially on expert, is nigh impossible no matter how much you play it. I can play YYZ in real life almost note for note, but try playing it note for note on Guitar Hero.
On the other hand, real guitar really is much harder, because it can take years of vigorous practice to get the chops to pull off many of the songs in real life, and only a short while to improve on Guitar Hero. You know, hearkening back to YYZ, people are much more impressed with my ability to play it IRL than in the game (sometimes, as playing it on GH at a party will make you the life of the room). |
