GUITAR HERO!!!!! what do you think?

Sign in to disble this ad
ok ok it has to be brought up eventually. what do you think of guitar hero? the first time i played it was after many beers and with several other musicians. i have to admit it was fun, but it drives me nuts when non-musicians talk about how they nailed some guitar solo and then i realize theyre talking about a video game.

First time I played it-I got booed off the stage playing "Message In A Bottle".One thing it has done,is gotten my boys (16 & 14) into some classic rock.I don't care to play it,but I do feel it almost cheapens a real musicians acclomplishments to a non musician.

Do you feel like playing Madden 08 cheapens the game of football?

Try the RockBand video game....I find it fun to play video game music with my friends who are not musically inclined...

And how do you fail when you play a real instrument? The thing only has 5 buttons!

My daughter has GH3. The first time she played it, I got out my bass and started playing along with her on some of the old rock songs. She got mad at me for some reason and doesn't want me playing along. And I won't play a plastic guitar.

It's fun for what it is. Rock Band is way more gnarly though.

Really fun. I don't compare it to actually playing an instrument because, well, it's a video game.

I like guitar hero. If it wasn't for GH3 and Queen, I probably wouldn't be playing bass right now. My brother got a Wii and GH3 for Christmas. I didn't care to play it at first, but eventually he got me to try it. I started to like it, though it seemed really difficult at first. It got easier over the weeks. I also started using the practice mode to play bass, then got the idea of getting a real bass to play. Now I use guitar hero for fun when I feel like hearing some of the songs I like. I also use it to listen to the bass parts of some songs and will play my bass sometimes as my brother plays the game. If there's a song I can't play on bass yet, I'll just play it on the game. Also, by using the no fail cheat on quick play mode, my brother and I are seeing who can get the highest score on Through the Fire and Flames on expert. He had a winning streak at one point, but now my high score has exceeded his, and I got somewhere around 150,000 points a few days ago. Sure, I only hit 65% of the notes, but I get better every time.
I think maybe the game may help some people, such as new musicians, with increasing the speed and accuracy of their fretting hand or with staying with the beat. It may have helped me somewhat. I remember a few months ago even some easy songs seemed difficult. I thought 4 buttons was hard on medium, and thought 5 would be even more difficult. Now I don't even like playing on easy or medium anymore since it's too simplistic. Playing a plastic guitar feels more real when you're at least pressing a button for every note. Anyway, I think it's a good game. Sure, it may not be the same as a real instrument, but it's still fun pretending to play something.

i have mixed feelings for the game, yeah its a game so its harmless entertainment but if some of my friends put as much time into a real guitar or bass as they did with GH (2 of them beat GH1,2,and3 on expert) they would be good enough to play in a real band.

It looks quite fun however I don't own the game nor have I ever played it.

As for the Madden comment. Not many people play Madden and say American Football is easy with GH players have a guitar in their hands. It's not a real one, but it's a guitar and quite frankly it's more realistic than playing air guitar to one of your favourite songs.

Like I've said I've never played GH but I've been told there's a bit of strumming required as opposed to pressing a few buttons to pass to another player.

I feel like I'm going off topic. Anyway, I plan on buying this game in the near future. If it's not too soon I'll be back with something more productive to say.

I've been playing it since it came out, and, believe it or not, its actually helped my bass playing by making my fingers more agile, cuz i started playing bass around the time the first GH was released. Before guitar hero, I could hardly make use of my pinky, and now I laugh my as off when i see some bassist only using three fingers to fret notes. As far as difficulty goes, i actually find it a lot easier to play a lot of the songs on guitar hero in real life than in the game(which really frustrates me sometimes). Take cowboys from hell for instance, that was one of the hardest songs on gh1, but is incredibly easy to play on real guitar, so at least give guitar hero some respect for at least bringing a musical experience to those without musical skill, even if you dont like it.

Ok I'm going to be a total and complete jerk when I say this...

We have enough guitards and other morons who THINK they are the bomb who actually play an instrument but do it poorly...why in God's name are we going to BROADEN that category of humans? Now we have idiots who think they can play an instrument because they can push on 5 buttons and a switch lol.

I gave it a try, I played it with my friends every now and then but I never really got what was so great about it. I personally like Rock Band better than it (mainly cuz of the drums though...it's a lot more realistic than the guitars), but that's still not saying much. That and I'm WAY tired of that "bass must be easy, look how simple it is on guitar hero" comment...I then point out the 4357610 ways that bass can be far more difficult than guitar if you're actually doing it RIGHT.

I think the REAL reason that most actual musicians get upset about Guitar Hero and other games like that, is because these companies really are cheating people out of something magnificent...and that's learning to play a REAL instrument. If people could only know how satisfying it is to really try your hardest to learn a song and master it on your instrument and the sense of accomplishment you have after doing it, I think more people would be picking up an actual bass or guitar instead of guitar hero. The very day I heard my kid sister ask about that game, I brought her over to my apartment and taught her some stuff on an ACTUAL bass ASAP (and I'm buying her a short-scale bass at christmas!). She might not feel like she's awesome right now, but when she can play what people are doing with 5 (or maybe 6 by then) buttons and a switch, she'll be doing with 24 frets and 4 strings, or who knows maybe 5 lol, she'll thank me

Sorry, the same as those commercials that tell kids to play actual basketball instead of NBA Slammin' n' Jammin' in the Zone Street Hoopz 2k08 AND-1 Edition might sound stupid...but in this regard, they do sorta have a point. It's better if you experience the real deal =/

You don't get annoyed at people who play shooting games because they could spend their time really shooting people, so why get mad at people playing guitar games for not putting that time in real life guitar? Its a game, games are made to be quick easy fun for one or two people at a time. It's in a completely different category than musicianship.

I disagree with you, there are a lot of people out there who dont really have a good aptitude for playing a real instrument, i think guitar hero helps people feel like they can for a brief moment ya know. It doesnt piss me of when people say they aced a song on GH, I just say "cool" and get on with things. Playing an instrument is just like anything else, you have to somewhat have an aptitude for it from the get go or else you probly wont get too far. I may try, but i cant dance for ****, but I can play Dance Dance revolution and get a good score. Is DDR anything like real dancing?(no) But i have fun with it anyway and I can laugh at myself when i try to dance. I just think s real musicians should cut all the GH and Rock band players some slack and let them have their games and we can have our instruments, its not hurting us any.

When visiting friends, my kids called me down to the game room to play. "Come on, Mom, you'll be great at this!" Needless to say, I wasn't. I tried several times, but I just couldn't get the hang of it. And I even play guitar!

I do appreciate the fact that it exposes kids to all kinds of classic music, and may get some playing the real thing, but for me, it's a waste of time.
