This thread is in memory of Art Linkletter.

Anyhow I heard a guitar player say explain to another guitar player that the reason why bass amps use Speakon connectors is that bass amps are so powerful that the amp will actually blow the connect right out of the back of the amp!

I would have corrected him but you just can't by this type of entertainment....so I just listened.

He also explained that electricity can arc across a regular 1/4 inch jack. (I am not electrical engineer but wouldn't that take a lot of high voltage to jump that gap?)

And finally that Speakon connectors come with thicker wire so that they don't melt the wire. (What kind of amperage is he running?)

Why do I get the feeling at some time in his life he used a cheap instrument cable to connect a cab to a high powered head?

The day I take technical advice from a guitar player is the day I blow my brains out. As in, no time soon.

Then again, having a drummer try to figure out how to connect amplifiers is pretty popcorn-worthy, too. That is, until somebody gets hurt.

It's always good to let rumors like that go. At the end of the grapevine who knows what kind of awesome that we'll get credit for?

My guitard finds connecting 4 stomp boxes together and getting a sound out the amp difficult. It is funny watching him kicking his pedals around like an angry baby when they don't work. Maybe if his pedals were not a blizzard of cheap broken patch cables, 20ft cables serving as patch cables and unprotected spare power jacks shorting off metal objects he would not have so much of a problem.

His advice for me was "You want a cheap Fender bass? You can go to New York and pick up an all-original 1960s Precision bass there for like $600". Yeah, sure man.

Playing with a buddy of mine...

Him: I don't like it when you use that bass. (referring to my Warwick)
Me: What's wrong with it? This thing sounds like a beast! *noodle something to prove my point*
Him: Yeah, it sounds awesome, but I can't follow along with your changes.
Me: *adjust some knobs* I'll try to cut through more?
Him: Nah, there's no dots on your neck, I can't find where you're playing.
Me: HAHA! Tough luck buddy!

Note: I'm no musical genius myself, but c'mon guy!

^ Ha! Your guitarist would love me, man - I play a couple of Fenders, but I always tune to D-standard - try following along with dots to that!

I think I've been pretty lucky with my guitarist. He's pretty technical, in a technical vocations class and all that. He understands good music and the value of a bassist (he offered to play bass, but that's my job ) and he often spends hours custom programming his own effects.

That said, we call him Awkward Guy for a reason.

those statements are actually all true, but these issues only begin to present themselves in really high-power PA situations (like many thousands of watts per box situations).

the fact is, a 1/4" jack is a terrible connector for any kind of real power. pro sound companies stopped using them for speakers a long time ago.

Ignorance makes me sick. And vox populi is mostly b/s. I don't make statements about anything I haven't profoundly studied/analyzed. I love precision in language and data. And I can't help but point out the mistakes/exaggerations backed by clear data. Most of all to ridicule ignorant preaching people (the kind I hate the most). Most of the times I look like a jerk, except for those who take the time to read/investigate enough to learn how something particular works. For the rest, I just don't care.
