Hi.
Being in the position of acting as a roadie as well as the band van driver, a soundman, and the bassplayer in our band, means that all sorts of unexpected stuff can go happen.
Last night we had an outdoor gig at a garden party. At garden parties over here, the electricity is often rather far away, and we have to be creative in order to make the lights work. Amps are no problem, we always have at least 1 16A 240V socket which is plenty for us amplification-wise.
I noticed an outdoor outlet at the top of the staircase on the side of the building, so I thought about checking that out, but found out that there was already some general lighting 500W halogens connected to it, so I decided against it.
When coming down the stairs, rather fast as we were setting up, my current choice of footwear, Crocs sandals and the wet staircase tiles decided to pull the "zero friction" trick on me. Me, with my 100Kg of weight, landed on my back/shoulders onto the stairs. Slid down a bit too, just like in the movies.
NOW THAT HURT LIKE HELL.
Fortunately I had the split second to think and pulled my chin to my chest and didn't hit my head, but my elbows I did.
After gasping for air into the emptied lungs for a few secs, I checked that everything still worked, I tried to stand, and surprizingly enough, no problems.
Proceeded to do the setting up, paying close attention to any signs of trouble, but luckily there was none.
The reason for the fall wasn't as much the questionable choice of footwear as I frst thought, but the fact that the almost brand spanking new building seemed to have smooth indoors wall tiles as outdoors floor tiles. I'm surprized that no-one else fell on their behinds that evening.
I'm SORE now, as can be expected, and typing with elbows hurting ain't fun, but we had a blast at the gig. The soreness will go away, so I guess that I can brush this off as just one of those things that a person of my age sure does know but just fails to be careful about when doing something distracting.
This will sound as silly as hell, I know, but especially on recent surfaces, it's better to check out the friction beforehand and not to find out the hard, painful way as I did.
Regards

I guess that I just wanted to give everyone a reminder to be careful in situations that are familiar and seem like safe ones.

Well the looks anyway, and the price of course.
I still do hate those qualities on them, but even though the price was steep IMHO, that's the best 50€ I spent on any shoes outside of the steel toed work boots variety I have to wear occasionally. Most of my foot pains are gone, most of the footwear related back pains too .
Mind You that the same kind of a fall would've happen with any and all regular shoes, the smooth tiles were like ice when wet.

crocks, untied sneakers, flip flops, sandals,et al are really not suitable for carrying stuff....and being caught dead in crocs is an indignity i dont need

Besides, everyone knows Birkenstocks have better tone.

Typically, I end up in a pair of Birks. But, this summer, I apparently hit my mid-life crisis early and picked up a pair of Air Jordans (one of the old school models).
Now, that's easy on the feet. |

on a serious note, you might consider making the owner of the building aware of this...there are certain 'codes' regarding the specification of walking surfaces, and especially stair treads, and especially outdoor stair treads...at the very least, the owner will have notification of the conditions and have the opportunity to act, possibly prevent a more serious situation from occurring
i'm glad you are ok

Sam | It is easy to remember the adage of safety first after a fall like that and although you had your wits about you to avoid head injury, it was pure luck that what you did >>prevented<< head injury, no?
Have a band meeting and get everyone to talk about unsafe practices and swear you'll call each other on it.
It would be so lame to lose a bandmate to an injury, yet we take ridiculous chances all the time.
Not Worth It!!!

Never could understand smooth tiles installed outside. Clear-coat with sand in it works well to stop the falls. Not a good thing to let something like this happen. I'd report the fall to everyone who would listen to help out the next guy.

What are you running for PA? That Bose 801? and Peavey sub? Cross-overs? How do they sound? Haven't seen that combo before?
