It happens in every bar.

These are things I've heard at just about every bar gig I've ever played at.

Here's some from drunks who always come to the stage during a break.

1. "Hey I have a guitar and I've been practicing a little."

2. "My cousin plays a bass kind of like that..."(Usually I get the cousin's life story or how much better the cousin is than me)

3. "My dad has a guitar. I think it's a fender? It's pretty good."

4. "I'm trying to put a band together and I can't even explain how great I am on vocals!....."

---- Here's a few you always get from the crowd. ----

5. "Play some Skynard!" or "Freebird!" (I usually answer this with the middle finger and and say "NO CHARGE!")

6. "Do you guys know....some obscure crapola!" (Why do people at bars wanna hear that song, that only they listen too? No one knows a B side cover of a Peter, Paul and Mary tune remade by Devo!)

7. Whatever genre your band is playing you always get the polar opposite in a bar. One night we were playing Nu metal with a band, we heard this after about an hour. "Do you guys know any country?"

If we hear "Freebird!", we play it. The 15 minute live version.

My newest band is going to start to gig out soon and I'm dreading hearing a bunch of this garbage from the local yuko's who seem to only dig the same standards from every single band that comes around.

There was a high school band that nailed "YYZ" and "Tom Sawyer." I mean they were good. Fantastic bass player but I think they just broke up. They played in a place that got away with a liqour license but billed itself as a restaurant, so kids could still get in on weekend nights. These guys were awesome, but what did the hilljacks go nuts for?

The band of fifty year olds playing "Brown Eyed Girl."

In two out of our three gigs last month we had three separate drunkies come and hijack our vocalist's mic and start jabbering and hollering into it.

My favorite phrase, and the only one I could understand out of any of them was:

"Your drummer SUCKS. I should drum for you."

The first one was at a dive bar, the drummer bit was at a nightclub.

Security isn't exactly tight with these places. :|

1. Fans of high school bands that can nail YYZ & Tom Sawyer: broke
2. Hilljack fans of "Brown Eyed Girl": Very likely not broke, and willing to blow all their money on drinks, every night of the week
3. Which band broke up & which one probably has a gig tonight?

...fixed it for you.

(..and no that is not a symbol of my approval, it's a comment on the lack of musical taste of the general public...however, they pay us, so we play it...sigh... )
