tried playing slap bass, while singing and changing effects with a straight mic stand (not a boom stand)

Needless to say, every time i popped i'd bump my wrist into the mic stand and get all messed up (im not even an "aggressive" slapper). And since it wasnt a boom stand i had to put my huge effects board off to the side, making it EXTREMELY awkward.

Good thing it was only at practice

I don't slap and try to refrain from singing, but I understand what you are talking about.

I'd say, practice with what you will use live. You wouldn't bring a new amp or bass to a gig without testing it, would you? No reason to practice with a straight stand.
