Perhaps there are 2 bass players... one for solos and fills, and the other to keep the beat (or the more popular theory of one being eyecandy and the other being the real bassist).

Just pick a list of cool words from movie titles and pick 2 or 3 to create a random name.

Example: looking at software cd's in a rack on my desk, a 2 word band name could be made from the software titles (Titanic Darkness). Just apply the same principle to the movie/cd/software/whatever titles. I could do the same thing by picking one word from an xbox title and one word from a ps2 title (Shadow Halo), etc... It's random but creative, and doesn't require a lot of brainstorming.

If you don't have a specific message that you're trying to share with the world (e.g. Rage Against The Machine, Enuff Z Nuff, etc.), just make up something that's similar to the types of bands you like in your genre. Maybe some dangerous sounding name (e.g. Avenged Sevenfold, Velvet Revolver, Whitesnake, Guns 'n' Roses, ), a painful or ill name (Red, Skinny Puppy, Slipknot, Underdog, As I Lay Dying, etc.), or whatever.

Some metal bands think it sounds cool to make religious or biblical references or blashemous names (Exodus, Testament, Lamb of God, etc.)

Just figure out what image you're trying to have and make up something that fits it. Chances are this isn't going to be the name you "hit it big with" anyway.

I like Auzzie's idea. Just becareful which two words you put together while you're looking around the house. You don't want to end up with Tampon Cascade or something.

I don't make any claim to the title, but I've had people call me a "lead bass" player. I take it as a compliment. My personal theory of bass playing is that it should be a "leading" instrument, as opposed to a "following" instrument. This has nothing to do with solos or wankery, but with defining the groove and feel of the song. You can't do that if you're following, only if you're leading.

My biggest pet peeve is playing with people who say, "Just follow the rhythm guitar for the chord, and the kick drum for the beat." Heck with that! What's with the presumption that those guys are always right, anyway? If anything, they should be following me! (if I know what I'm doing, that is)

The biggest problem, though, is that if you're following anything, you're always going to be just a fraction of a beat behind. That just makes for bad bass (which is to say, mediocre, the enemy of good).

It's like hitting a baseball: If you wait to swing until you see the ball cross the plate, you'll never hit it. You have to anticipate where the ball is going to be, and swing through that spot.

If you're following, you'll always be on the back-side of the beat. If you're leading, you'll be on the front-side. It may sound like a subtle thing, and it is, but it makes all the difference in the world to how the tune is presented. A lot of people don't get it, even a lot of bass players.

You can be a "lead" instrument without ever playing a solo. The 2 roles don't necessarily have anything in common. Leading musically means defining the groove, and where the tune goes. I think bass is the perfect lead instrument, because it works at the intersection of the 3 primary aspects of music - melody, chord, and rhythm - closer than just about any other .

That's my take on "lead bass". Others may think something else, like more along the lines of a solo instrument, or a bunch of fast stuff. It's probably the best idea to ask somebody what they mean when they say it.

You've probably got bigger fish to fry. Take care of business. Find your common artistic ground. A good name is likely to just fall out of nowhere once you've got everything else figured out & will reflect the identity that you've developed. Somebody will just say it, & it will feel right to everybody. Relax & let a good name find you.
