But, none of that mattered, because she was there with me. Its actually quite funny to watch some guy put the moves on your woman, then you just walk up like 'Hey, hows it going' and the guy gets all "Uhhhh..." and walks away. Ive had guys buy me a drink just for being cool and not starting **** with them over it.

One time, I was playing a show, and a guy came up hitting on my wife. Her cousin leaned over to him, after he bought her a drink, and said...
"Hey, you see that guy up there wearing the blue shirt playing bass? Yea, the one with NAVY on it... That is her husband. He's an ex Navy SEAL. He just got out, and doesn't really like to talk about it".
The guy thought she was serious, and left my wife alone, only to confront me later, and ask about "what I did" over there... I had to lie as well, but in the end, it worked. |

For example, we were playing a college party and some guy hit on my mother (yes, my mother) several times on the dance floor; about the fourth time my dad grabbed this punk by the throat and pulled back to hit him when one of our "protectors" unhooked the guy from dad's fist, carried the punk outside and threw him down a hill. He was beaten up by the fraternity when he climbed back up the hill and tried to re-enter...another time a guy came at one of the guitar players with a knife while we were playing...another guy tried to stroll through our equipment during a break with a cinder block on his head competing in a "cowboy" hat contest...our "protectors" usually sit with the band women so I do not know how many bad incidences just never occurred...an ounce of prevention

And my wife stayed home with the kids. I imagine it might become an issue because my wife is very good looking (and NO, you can't get a pic..."No pic no wife rules don't apply here..... ). I never thought a lot about it because she gets the pickup lines a lot at work and just laughs them off.
But I have a close friend who plays lead guitar in a popular local band. His wife is a smokeshow. But she controls the situation. She tends to sit at a table right near the band, and often times one of his friends or groups of friends sit with her. Me included, when I get out to see them. And she tends to leave fairly early in the night before the real drunks start to come out of their shells.

| | | | I straight up tell my girlfriend, when I am playing there are going to be lots of drunk girls, hitting on/flirting with the band, its my job to play along with that as they are the ones buying drinks, cds and getting me hired back to play again, and they can deal with it or stay home. And if you don't trust your girl to be faithful to you while you're in the same room, then find another one. That being said if I ever saw a guy getting forcefully physical with my girl while I was playing I wouldn't think twice about putting my bass down and breaking his teeth. |

I've seen him leap across the bar to try and knock someone out for "talking to his girl"... I left that band shortly after.
My wife knows that getting hit on is "part of the gig". I like to call it "networking". She knows and trusts me enough to know it's just harmless flirting and that I would never take it to the next level.

So needless to say as soon as the gig was over with I strolled over there to put my basses away and he was all "I'm not trying to steal your girl man, no worries!" I should mention that she was one of two folks in this bar that was clearly of latin descent (we were playing in Martinsburg, WV; I leave it up to your imagination ) and the only female (and not bad looking, either).
I just shrugged it off. My history is such that I know this: if someone is going to cheat they will, be it right in front of your face or behind your back. We weren't involved enough to warrant a physical outburst and if she had gone home with him I would have smiled and left: she can find her own way back. And ultimately, it was less drinks that I was paying for so it was all good . That's pretty much the way I look at it at any time.
Peace,
Greg

My old man just saw 'Jersey Boys', where a similar incident is scripted into the play - he's convinced it's a portrayal of him on that fateful night... |
