I can't tell you that this happened to me but I read this out in Bass Player magazine.
A bassist was playing a big gig at a really fancy function and he had brought his $80 000 130 year old upright bass and his amp. He always set up his amp on a chair and again he did that and he but his bass down beside it. He turned his back to set up some other equipment and heard a crash. To his horror, his amp had smashed the neck from the body of his bass. It was unplayable. He made some phone calls to local luthiers and one of the people helping set up offered his fender jazz bass as a replacement. He had found a luthier with a upright which was approximately as old as his so he asked the luthier to make some special modifications to it. Half an hour later the luthier arrives with the bass. Relieved, the luthier tries to hand him the bass but it was out of reach and another casualty. The bass had shattered into tons of pieces. The luthier was furious and while the audience was sitting there watching the ordeal happen he yelled "Never play bass!" and stormed off with the remnants of his bass. The original upright was in critical condition but apparently is undergoing successful repairs.
Don't ask me the names of the guys, I can't remember them for the life of me. Talk about a bad day eh?
