I apologize in advance...
It happened in New York City, in a heatwave very much like this one.
A small orchestra was rehearsing the last parts of Beethoven's 9th
symphony in the heat of the afternoon when the air conditioning broke
down. Struggling to beat the sweltering heat, the janitors rigged up
several large industrial fans. Unfortunately these set up a terrible
din, and the wind from the fans was blowing the musician's sheet music
off of their stands.
The musicians had to tie their music to their music stands with cords
and rubber bands. Meanwhile, several of the bass players, disgusted by
the confusion, slipped off to a nearby pub for a few cold beers. They
returned about an hour later in a highly intoxicated state. Two of the
trumpet players fainted from the heat. The combination of the heat and
humidity was causing the instruments to go in and out of tune. The
conductor, trying desparately to restore order, gave the orchestra a
single clear note to which they could tune. Overwhelmed by frustration,
the first chair violinist ran from the rehearsal, all the way back to
his nearby house.
So there it was...

<no, really>
<I did apologize in advance>
Yes, there it was, the bottom of the Ninth and the fans were roaring
wild. The scores were tied and the basses were loaded with two men out,
when, at the pitch, a desparate man ran home.
