How to fake the funk...?

Sign in to disble this ad
I guess everybody around here knows:

"Don't fake the funk or your nose will grow"

I thought about that, and I've been wondering: How exactly does one fake the funk? Is it even possible to fake the funk at all?

I came to the conclusion that it's NOT possible to fake the funk. Because, if you try to pass something off as "funky", that futile endeavor could easily be spotted and thus, it would not be possible to fake the funk because that would imply that the knock-off couldn't be kept apart from the real funk without closer inspection.

Plus, Jazz cats aren't able to be funky at all, because all they do is fake their way through.

Oh boy.. this could get messy, especially that last sentence. I know what you meant by it, but the Jazzcats might not.

Good luck.

I fake the funk all the time. I don't have a funky bone in my body, yet I can lay it down pretty well. But it is an intellectual exercise, not an inate feel for that groove.

It helps that I work with a drummer that has tons of blue-eyed funk, even though he looks like a geek. I'd probably look ridiculous on my own...

Lol. I just had to learn this for a prospective gig.

They are not playing at all...The bassist doesn't do anything like the actual melodic run after the chorus.

... study the masters, Bootsy Collins et rest. Actually I think Verdine White of Earth, Wind&Fire is sometimes not recognized as an excellent funk player, tasty too.

+1 for not faking the funk. Either you got the funk, or you dont.

What happens if, in an attempt to fake the funk, you stumble ass-backwards into actual funk? Is that then genuine funk or merely funky imitation?

It's genuine funk because he f*cked up the fake in a funky way which in turn is funky itself.

You can't fake the funk or your nose will grow! It's really the basic tenet of the Pinocchio theory.

Uh, I have heard some pretty funky jazz cats, so I'll refute that argument. Maybe someof the older-school bebop guys fall into that generalization, but not some of the newer generation.

As for me, I'm old, white, proud, and still funky...'cos I get women half my age tellin' me that in between kisses and other things.

Lighten up folks - I think this was a humorous reference to the use of "fake books" in jazz. Not a bad pun in reference to "faking the funk".

Clearly, there are countless funky hombres in Jazz, as the OP no doubt knows.
