How I Met My Rig

Sign in to disble this ad
I found two cabs for my rig on craigslist and went to pick them up yesterday. While I was playing through them I hear a toilet flush.... and water started dripping on my arm! I looked to see a hole in the ceiling with an exposed and leaking pipe. Apparently it had been leaking for some time since there was a 5-gallon bucket under it.

Get the cabs to practice and (after scouring myself) crank it up and start to play. About two songs in my drummer stops mid-song saying he smells something burning. Sure enough there's a smokey smell from the cab. Nothing looked to be on fire and there wasn't actually any smoke. Finished the rest of practice with no incident and the smoke smell gradually faded. I think the cabs had been kept in a smoking house and the ashese collected in the cab got blown out when I really cranked it up. ANyone ever experience something similar to this?

After it was all said and done I think I made out ok. Got an Avatar 1x15 and a 2x12 for $400 and a carvin B15000 to power them for an extra $300. Plus I have an excellent story about how I got it.

Cigarette smoke and leaking toilets? These are now the perfect cabs for metal!

I think these cabs are cursed by the bad mojo of your acquisition experience. Since they will never love you now, you should just give them to me...

Just the opposite... we now have a great story about how we met. It was a bonding experience and they are greatful for their new dry, smoke-free home.

Smoking cabinet

I once bought a Peavey 1810 from a guy that claimed it had been used in a house band for about a year, and never moved.
He brought it over in the back of a pickup, but when I took it in the house, about gagged from the smoke smell.
I took it out to my workshop and cleaned layers of yellow nicotine stain from the tolex for hours. My wife never would let me bring it back in the house, and it made it through three jobs before the eighteen crapped out. I unloaded it for like $50 just to get rid of it.

I definitely understand why non smoked on equipment is so desirable!
