Lots of gigs played (20 years worth) We probably average 150 people per show. We play bars, and I'm not exactly sure what the legal capacity is, but we do pretty well as far as packing them in.

Depends on the venue. We're pretty new, and our regular crowd is still small. Anywhere from 20 to 150.

You all can help me out though!! Playing this Friday in S. Windsor, CT...

We have had literally one show so far (after many months of practice, people wanted to get it right) so right now only about 20. Most of those are friends of course, but we're working on it!

Anywhere from 5 to 250 people. Depends on the venue and the band. I'm in two bands, each shoots to play between 6 and 10 times a year.

20 - 400+

Just all depends on the bar, venue, night, season, weather, humidity, gravitational pull, sunspots, number of local ufo sightings and alien abductions, etc.

Essentially... it just depends.

Original gigs: 25-200 (not counting festival shows, etc)

Cover gigs 50-250 (depending on the venue....the venue brings them, we just try and keep them there)

It varies but the underground DOOM metal scene doesnt tend to bring the big crowds We play a good many shows, mainly every weekend somewhere.
We have however played for quite a few sometimes.

Very strange that you mention that, because I am Canadian, and I found that joke to be quite funny.

Would Americans not appreciate it as much as Canadians? I've known British comedy to be different, but I had never come across the notion that there are any substantial differences between Canada and the US.
Of course, culturally speaking, I think, to the dismay of my peers, that the differences between Canada and the US are largely exaggerated. The cultural difference between say, the southern states and the rest of the states is much greater than that between Canada and the US as a whole, IMO (an admittedly uninformed opinion at that).

Edit: I realize this is completely off topic, but it actually steers the thread into the direction it should have taken given that it is in the humour section. Oh wait, "Bass humour and gig stories" .... nevermind.

Hey twistdpair, what is your band and what place are you playing? I may be in the area. I'll try to stop in, but no promises, I'm a musician, heh heh heh...

To OP, we draw between 0 - 40 for my original bands and (so far) 10 - 40 for my cover band. It depends on the venue, day of the week, weather and if there is a cover charge (we know a lot of cheap people )

Note that this is people that we contact and come specifically to see us, it doesn't count the regular crowd at the bar. Fortunately people that we don't know yet tend to like us and we usually don't drive anybody away.

The original bands have been around for years and we play about 5 - 10 times a year. The cover band has been around a little less than a year and we have played bars exactly 11 times, plus a few parties (I keep good notes!)

**** Off Eh!

Truthfully, I've never noticed much of a difference myself. Of course, I'm from Michigan which is pretty much southern Ontario with lower taxes and a higher crime rate.

The original band... I would say aroun 30-200 people... but then again we have also played to like 1 person a couple times as well.

we have played probably 30 shows this year.

We do a mix of covers and originals. Of "people in the bar because of us" - usually between 40 and 50 - We had one with only 22 back in May. Accounting for other bar patrons that aren't there specifically to see us, maybe another 30ish.

We've been playing out roughly once every two months since March.

we are marketing something different in Dallas, we do runway rock shows where we play the most popular rock covers and have extremely beautiful models do a fashion runway show. Of course the crowd likes the music but most of them are there for the girls, we usually pull 500 - 1500 people a night. But we do not play more than once a month so that helps the draw and the keeps the show at more of an event status rather that just a gig. And then we take this show on the road for the USO and play for the troops in Asia, Europe and Middle East.

In my experience or whatever, American humour *tends* to be more of the "making fun of other people" variety, like minorities making fun of white people, gay people making fun of straight people, women making fun of men, white straight men making fun of other white straight men. The other side of American humour is vulgarity - jokes about sex, or swearing - Andrew Dice Clay and older Eddie Murphy are good examples. Canadian humour tends to be more situational or self-effacing. There are some obvious exceptions, such as Bill Cosby or the Canadian "Newfie joke," which is really popular in central and western Canada to make fun of the folks from Newfoundland, but even those are typically sitational, just using a Newfoundlander in the situation rather than someone local. And Newfies *are* kinda funny, to tell the truth. (sorry to any Newfs on this board) Interesting is that Newfie jokes as told by Newfies are often making fun of "mainlanders."
