It all depends on the venue here in the Omaha area, and how well known the act or band is. If you are on the bottom end of the food chain, you are playing for part of the door, and it goes up from there. Ideally my band likes to make at least 100 bucks a person for a standard one nighter local club/bar gig. We are a five piece unit these days, and our per person rate is average for most other acts like us in our town. Sometimes we'll work for less, but not much less. We also ask for, and have gotten more. Omaha has a decent music scene overall, but like most other places the recent economy and other factors, have kept what venues are willing, or can afford to pay local and regional acts stagnant, if not downward from what a band could get 5-6 years ago. I also think the state ban on smoking, preceded by Omaha's ban, has killed off some local clubs which included ones that paid bands pretty well. Similar tales of woe are occurring in other states that have enacted similar bans from their respective club and entertainment businesses. Oh well, at least we can enjoy cleaner lungs while competing for fewer gig opportunities.

One of the best things to do is to realize that you're probably never going to pull a profit with your band. I sure don't make one. Anymore, I'm just happy to play bass. If I make a few dollars on the side, well, I won't complain!

Good Luck on your gig!

+ one. If you have any business sense at all you should be able to make money.

My band has charged anywhere from $700.00-$2,000.00 for private gigs. You must factor in a 2 hour drive, plus your PA, or rental of a PA.
Heck at some gigs, the PA is more than the band.
Also, is the gig outside, inside, etc.
You need to now the details, the room, etc.
IMHO: Don't short change yourself, especially if your a decent band.

Any answer to this thread can't possibly be relevant without taking the local scenes in consideration.

You can't just take what works in one economy and decide it's going to be the same everywhere else. This just leads to confusion!

Also, are you guys talking Australian Dollars? The OP is in Melbourne.

Phatbass posted and he lives in Australia. He said ask for $2000 which I believe is at least 4 times what the OP asked for.
