How rude (or not) is this?

Say, you're at a gig. Some local player that you don't know or anyone in your band doesn't know beyond the basic "Hey how ya doin, what's up, cool, see ya" comes up on stage leans his guitar case up against your stand so you can't use it without moving his instrument...then without a word just walks off.

No asking, no thanking, no sorry about that dude no nothing.

I realize I'm a dinosaur and that civility, manners and plain common courtesy are a thing of the past but still, on the scale of people peeing on your leg, that's peeing above the knee.

Thoughts?

Is this a jam night, or a regular gig? I say, put his Hondo guitar case in your band truck, and see how many polite communications he can come up with!

Lame

Never had that happen to me before but I would probably just move his case out of the way so I could use my stand. Pretty rude if you ask me.
+1 to the present from a fan! LOL

Yeah I think I'd just yell out "Hey thanks for the new guitar!" see what he does.

Was his band playing after yours? It's still pretty rude. I would expect a cursory "Hi guys, how ya doing, we're playing next, can I put my stuff here?" If he just left it there without comment I would move it to the back or side of the stage, wherever I thought convenient.

If he wasn't playing later that night, then he had no business being on the stage or near your gear at all. That's asking for it to be launched out into the crowd.

No. If it was one of those original show free for all's where there are multiple bands sharing gear and work space or if the guy did those kind of gigs himself I could at least understand where it came from but, he doesn't.

I barked at him, He got all butt hurt and stormed out. The band leader said I should be a little more tolerant which is kinda funny because I have NEVER met anyone more territorial than he is.

I get up this morning and there is some facebook message from him saying something along the lines of: "You have issues but I am not inclined to help you sort them out"

Then...he unfriended me.

Unless you see him all the time, I wouldn't worry about it.

So..wait...in the OP, you said you didn't know him, then just here you say you did (FB at least). Did you know this cat at all when he walked up and did this or not?

...not that it matters, if he leaned his stuff against yours without asking permission, he's over the line, IMO. However, maybe you might have just bared your teeth at him instead of actually biting him.

I don't consider expecting people to respect your space and things to be "territorial", just being sensible on your part to take care of what is yours...you weren't out of line in being offended, but maybe a slightly less aggressive response?

I usually make a joke out of this type of situation, and try and embarrass the individual, but do it good-naturedly if possible.

I think that the obvious proper solution would have been to mark your territory by peeing on his case.

Really though, to just shove your stuff up into someone's space while they're trying to play is just rude. I'm not that old and I would agree with you that civility is all but dead.

Similar happenstance: At a regular paying gig we had a guy place a portable tape recorder on our stage near the keyboard player's speakers on the floor, and he went to the bathroom. On a raised stage you can see everything!!
A song that used sythe bass was performed, so I exercised my beer rights. Seen the tape recorder & no one in my band claimed it. So myself and keyboardist (practical joker he is) kicked it around before turning it off.
Whoever it belong to came up to claim it-but between band members it mysteriously disapperared.
Never saw or heard from that party again!!! And we acquired a free small recorder.

So if he wasn't playing after you, why was he taking his instrument onto the stage? Did he expect to be invited up as a guest musician or something? I'm confused.

Anyway, it was in a case, so you couldn't really harm the instrument by moving it unless you really tried. I'd just move it to the side and forget about it.

I take it he (or he and his band) was playing the same show but a later time slot?

Perhaps this was some semi-conscious snooty "I'm in the headliner, you're just opening" sort of deal?

The Facebook fallout is the most telling out of all this. If your band leader really posted that snarky comment and then unfriended you, he is a top-tier azz-ole and you need to get out of that band ASAP.

A real band "leader" would have confronted the dude himself instead of leaving it to you to handle.
