Twelve years ago today I got my first bass. I was sitting back reflecting on what I'd be doing with my time if I didn't play. I figure I'd be restoring old cars, what I do now I suppose. What do you think you'd do?

I might have stuck with martial arts (shotokan karate for years, and I was actually quite good at it too - aikido later on but my heart wasn't in it and I didn't stick with it for long) or I might have spent more time behind a pc (something I devote too much time to as it is) and reading comic books.
But definitely not restoring old cars |

My master plan when I was 16 was to be an English teacher. Instead, I wound up playing in clubs for 25 years and never did get that English degree. Today I do communications and play bass, but no longer for aliving. Having no degree hasn't made my life any less pleasureable. But I think I'd have missed a lot of the good things if I'd never played bass.

If I hadn't taken it up I'd be spending a lot more time listening to old vinyl while smoking cigars and drinking Cognac, and probably a little more cycling as well. I have no intention of playing less bass, but I still do my fair share of the other stuff.

Both hobbies compete...big time...for your free time. At present, music is on top, the old car waits. And I ride the Harley when I have time. Music is: less aggrevating than working on the old car, and: safer than riding the Harley. I hope I never have to give up playing bass.

Even when you factor in GAS, bass is markedly cheaper than my old hobbies of restoring cars and bikes.
