How to u face Piano Player that strongly hitting left hand Bass line?

Sign in to disble this ad
just went to a gig last week. it's a wedding party.
The instrument we had was electronic drums, bass, keyboard, strings and vocal.

the pianist was a player who never play with bassist in band, i think. and we all go amp-less due to the small space. just by monitor speaker.

she ask the sound man to cut to electronic drum's kick bass frequency to very low and sounded like hand clapping. then the my electric upright sound like baritone high mid instrument once after the soundcheck.

i hardly tweak my DI box Bass EQ to max, it finally sounded a bit bass, but the pianist is hitting the left hand bass line on a very loud volume. the volume ratio of the piano is like 8/10 while bass n drums are 3/10.

well i hv nothing to say since i dont know her b4 the show.
i just keep unison her line in that low volume. Its ok to unison the bassline on ballad or latin or folk styles. Once in the swing style, she hits the walking bass line like never louder.

i was leaving a status about this on fb on that day, i think a mutual friend liked it 4 days later. i dont know how she saw it tru the mutual friend.
She Called the agent to ask me for apologize because i have critic her and hurt her...
I felt unlogic to apologize as I didnt mention the name never means to critic her. I deleted the status very quickly hope it will end.

Now we have a couple of shows next week, she told the agent that she won't show up for the shows that I am in.

MAN! She like almost a 30 yrs old woman. Im a 20 years old music student in university.
This player really have a heart of a child, now the agent is suffering for the dilemma.

At the end, i got her number from agent and sms a apologize msg.
hope the things will be fine, but it seem does works...

ive got cancel from the 2 remaining gig i will be having with her, and join another group for 1 gig only...

means ive got cancel 1 show, n she still remaining in the same place...

she the one who didnt want to show up for the gigs, but now im the one who got kick out...

Think of it as lip-syncing, only at a bass format

Who got her booked? Is it a standing future collaboration, or it was a one-off?
I'f it's the former, try to keep cool and invite her over to a rehearsal of yours, where you (the rest of the band) dictate the volume levels, making her realize that there are other instruments as well and that you REALLY want to get all running smoothly. No egos or hostility, just record the rehearsal HER way at first, and then have the BAND's way. I am sure she will agree, once you all listen to the recording together

Smack her in the head (To get her attention) And then explain since there is already a Bass Player, she doesn't have to play Left handed Bass.

"classicaly trained" pianist right? She is not used to hearing her sound mixed with other people. I have dealt with this. She needs her own amp (roland kc350's are great) so the sound guy can eq the mix right for the house. Try practicing in a big room with everyone in their own corner and turn down way low.

I am the sound guy for my band. I never let the musicians hear the house mix through the monitors!

Also, tell her to keep that left hand out of your range! Just say "stay the f@@k in you own lane, and I will do the same"!

What if you wanted to grab a drink during a song?
Once in a while that heavy left hand comes in handy.

Just tell the keyboard player, "Hey I know you can cover the bass, but sometimes I'm doing something different and in the front of house it sounds like the bass line is out of tune."

Your way is nice but all the end of the story, she's not a band player at all. she's been playing on a piano solo career on a cruise i think for couple of years

I just stop playing. I figure, hey, I'm getting payed to be here, not by the note. If the keys want to do my job and their job, then I have a cake gig.

They usually GET it after a tune or so...

passionbass.
you need one separate monitor for her. she has to hear herself. she has to get out of your way with her left hand.

^This. I've dealt with classically trained pianists a few times over the last couple of years. They're all over the place. They play way over the top, and don't know how to use their left hand at all. IMO, the answer isn't to give them a keyboard amp, or try to EQ their left hand out. It'll still sound clattered and horrible. If the gig is important, then someone HAS to say something about their playing. It probably won't go over well because accomplished classical players don't have much room for criticism, especially from a bass player. If the gig isn't a big deal, and you'll get paid either way, just do what you can to enjoy it. Enjoy some upper register noodling, or just play root grooves to keep things from clashing. One thing is for certain, and that is that they keyboardist is really unable to hear anyone else in the band except themselves.

You would be surprised by how often exactly that has happened in my life....and somehow, I'm not at all bothered by it. I figure in that case, I'm getting paid to suffer through the bad, no groove, poor choice of notes basslines the keys are playing. Underpaid usually, at that.

Gard, I often feel that way being in the army band with all the friggin non bass players that do not have any gigs that want to play anything so they pick up a bass. I say good on them, I still get paid!
