First time I ever started the night with Happy Birthday, and then an old Japanese song they wanted to hear for follow up!
Had a lot of fun and they bought me too much to drink... |

I had to use a Behringer/ashton(not ashdown, cheaper than Behringer) rig. |

The first night our new guitar player who has been in the band for 4 months already still has not reached a comfort level with the tunes and proceeded to demo this in a very loud way. I guess there is a reason they are refered to as "guitards". He's a good guy, has awesome gear and tone and can actually play but for some reason is not doing his homework. I was fighting with him for the groove all night and even had a meeting with the other bandmates later discussing whether a replacement might be in order. Last night (Sat) was alot better. The guitarist turned down a little and was listening and laying back more. once he did this he was actually able to relax a bit and play remarkably better. Although he still has work to do we all could start to hear the things that made him our choice in the first place. I hope he works out.
As far as myself, I had a much better night on Saturday as well. I got my tone dialed in much better and I was able to loosen up a bit and groove nicely with the drummer. We sounded solid overall and were even surprised by another club owner who stopped by to check us out and has offered us some dates to choose from.
I love when the gig ends on a high note! |

Never, ever, EVER expect the supplied backline to be adequate unless they tell you EXACTLY what is being supplied (down to model names) |

We were told not to bring amps, big mistake.
Thought I might add a good point to my weekend gig. We got a manager, and also met a few other people in the metal scene |

Mics included, because nothing takes less space than a mic, but nothing can help ruin a show faster than the singing sounding like crap, or the cheesy mic feeding back. |

| | | Started out ruff but turned out pretty good. Guitar player stuck at the lake.
Our sound guy stepped in to cover some 2nd guitar duties as our regular 2nd GP could not make the gig. He is leaving perminately in Oct. Sound guy did ok, but not a replacement. Still searching

Gig was a private b-day party for a bunch of people from work (drummer and I work together), including one of my employees, so the crowd was certainly receptive.
It was the first gig since our guitar player was killed in a car wreck a couple of months ago. We used a sub that we'd used before and who was also friends with our guy.
And, I finally got a chance to play my Lakland and Nordy on-stage. They worked out pretty dang good, too. So good in fact that I've pretty much shut down my For Sale ads on these two basses. I'm keepin' them for now!

So, we had our first gig last night...played at the same bar we had our last three practices at.
It went OK...no major train wrecks...there are still a handful of songs the two singers struggled with, but we got through. One of the amps powering the monitors blew out during the very first song (!), so the singers had to perform without monitors. Not ideal, to say the least.
The bar owner was kind of an ass. He knew this was our first time playing out, and is aware of what happened with the guitarist/band leader (major death in the family a few months back at the beginning of summer). I guess he hassled him after the second set and said something along the lines of "You guys suck, you didn't bring a crowd." We ended up playing an abbreviated third set after that and then packed it in for the evening.
Well...the roads around his bar are completely torn up right now, with limited parking to begin with. This town probably has forty or fifty bars in a town of 20,000+ (seriously). He did absolutely no advertising, not even a sign outside the bar saying "Live Music Tonight" or whatever. There was also another band playing only two doors down the block, and they also had a bad turnout. What did he really expect?
Anyway, we're done with that place...hopefully things are tighter on our next gig. I think the girls finally realize what it's like to play in front of a live audience, so hopefully they buckle down some more and tighten up their material. They need to learn stage presence too...
I guess my plan is to see how things go next Saturday (we don't have anything booked after that) and re-evaluate what I want to do.

We had a ton of people come out to see us, more than expected. Probably one of the best shows we've had.

| | | | OK...
Got a call last week to sub with a new band that had their first gig Friday. The singer and guitarist had never played a real gig before! As you'd expect, they weren't quite ready, and there were a few momments where I was trying to follow what they were doing (structures/endings and such), and clearly THEY had no idea.
However, all in all they did a good job. Audience (loaded with friends, but plenty of venue regulars too) had a good night, no trainwrecks, and the band had a blast. For new guys they showed a lot of potential, and once they get some gigs behind them they'll should be really good. |

| | Registered User | | Join Date: Mar 2008 Location: Cincinnati, Ohio | | | eh... so so. It started out nice because the bar was absolutely PACKED! 75% of the crowd showed up after the Bengal's game, so they also left somewhat early. I don't blame them though, it must've been a long night already.
As far as the band, well, there were some band notes all around (some more than others), but not too bad. |

Sunday - played on the rooftop of a bar in College Station Texas for a back-to-school party for a Texas A&M fraternity. Nothing like rockin' it out to drunk frat boys and girls
