You must be a generation ahead of me. I don't remember the Pickers, but Stark Raven sure was a good band.

Attractive singer you have there. You need to reposition yourself on stage so your keys player's head doesn't obstruct your view!

I for one could never see paying someone just to sing no matter how good they look or sing! They had to play keys, guitar,etc, not that its wrong to pay someone to just sing, just sayin equal work for equal pay.
IMHO

You're saying that singing a song is not comparable work to playing a song on bass?

Personally, I always hoped that my singer/lead guitar player never brought up that he was doing 2 jobs and wanted double pay.

If all the band members can sing lead and backup adding a person who just sings to me is a waste, but as I said if that is what a group is ok with it's your call, it just doesn't work for me and that is my issue.
I've helped out bands with lead singers and always felt I was there backup band. Its not where I want to be. Equal work in like beauty, it is in the eye of the beholder.
I did not intend to offend anyone just offer a different view.
Sorry if I ruffeled any feathers.
Love & Peace

Think about it from the audience's perspective: a front person who is not tied to a mic stand or hidden behind a guitar or keyboard can often put on a more engaging show. Many people listen with their eyes---the more interesting the show is to look at, the better you sound.

THIS

Sure, the main band can (and has) played as a 4-piece, without singerbabe, who does nothing beyond vocal, visual, and a bit of percussion. It means that we have an hour less of material to draw from, and inevitably limits our ability to engage an audience. This was hammered home, over Labor Day weekend, at a show upstate, in a small town. We were "that good band from Phoenix," for the first half, and then singerbabe appeared for the second half. We became "that good band from Phoenix with the smokin' hot singer," and were able to keep everyone engaged, until closing time.

The Mighty Mighty Bosstones has a band member who neither sings nor plays an instrument. He just hangs out up on stage and dances. It's part of their live show schtick, and so part of their appeal. Especially here in the singerbabe thread - if a singer has the ability and charisma and, well - singerbabeness - to be a valuable part of the show, they absolutely are worth their cut. Our singer doesn't play anything more than tambourine, and she actually sings lead on maybe 3/4 of the songs, but I wouldn't do without her on the stage for anything.

@theDuke1

You are definitely entitled to your opinion but or myself having a great singer is equal to having any other great instrumentalist. Possibly more because most audiences hear he band but listen to the singer.

When was the last time people came to see the band because of the bass player, drummer, keyboard? Unless he sings too, usually not even because of the guitarist.

You'll get much further with a great singer and mediocre (NOT BAD) musicians than great musicians and a mediocre singer.
