I bring you - the worst bassist in the world!

Sign in to disble this ad
I've got nothing against simple music or simple bass parts, but this guy is seriously doing nothing except plucking the same open string through the entire five minutes of the song. And he can't even pluck it fast! And as if that wasn't bad enough, he can't even get that right and needs someone else's help in the first part of the song! His bass sure looks expensive, too... what a waste.

Why the audience doesn't pelt him with bottles or at least laugh at him till he's embarrassed off the stage, I don't know. But they should! He definitely deserves it!

i get the impression that wasnt the bassist and that the real owner of that bass was the dude helping him play it in the beginning.

Yeah but you've also got to give credit for stage presence -- he definitely has the best outfit in the whole group!

I seriously doubt that one of those two is the actual owner/user of that double-bass

Regards,
Adrian

This reminds me of a story; excuse me if you have heard it before. Mose Allison had just finished a gig at a bar in Chicago. Only people left were Mose and Jake, the janitor. Mose was sitting at the piano and kept playing the same note over and over. Finally Jake said, "Mr. Allison I have seen a bunch of folks come through this bar and play that piano. But they play all kinds of notes, all over the key board. How come you just playing that same note over and over?" Mose looked up at him and said, "Jake, all those other people were looking for it. I found it."

The piece is inspired by Medieval music, which often featured a one-note drone. A melody sung or played against a single drone note is actually the earliest form of harmony in Western music.

Sorry, it's that damb masters degree in Ethnomusicology coming back to haunt me. I actually kind of dig what these guys are trying to do, although I don't think it succeeds ultimately. But what ruins it for me is not the bass "line," it's the pitchiness of the singers.

I guess there are no other Dead Can Dance fans around here....

ethnomusicology? Well that makes at least one person on here who has nothing to fear from a downturning economy. I'm not sure what the point of all that was, but I don't think the "bassist" was the worst problem.

Ha. Yeah, about half of my originals band's songs used to be like that. For one gig I couldn't make, I loaned my EUB so one of the other members (who has some medieval replica fiddle) could play it on a few songs where she doesn't have much to do. She tried playing more notes on one song and the lead singer asked her to stop doing that and just stick to The One Note. Haha.

They eventually got tired of that, though, and now want me to play normal pop bass grooves on their new songs. Oh well. One guy in full-blown medieval costume including a chainmail shirt showed up at last night's gig and asked us (and some random people) to sign his shield anyway.

Yeah, when I saw the lead singer playing a dulcimer I thought of Lisa Gerrard at once.

Yes, I also immediately thought of Dead Can Dance. I love Lisa Gerrard, to me she is the most perfect vocalist, and can bring me to tears.
