I found out the hard way I'm allergic to violin rosin...

Sign in to disble this ad
Played violin today with a friend and now pretty much every bit of skin that's come into contact with the rosin or the dust from the rosin is now full of itching welts.

I'm cutting myself to pieces scratching with anything I can find, and hydrocortisone cream isn't helping.

Strange thing is that I've never had any bother up until now...

Ouch. Make sure you wash your clothes well. Maybe wash then separately from your other clothing so it has less chance of spreading. Are you allergic to trees? Some people have luck with this line of rosins.

Good Luck,

I can play upright, but I don't own one and so don't play often.

I really hope that I'm not going to have repeat performances- I'm really hoping to learn DB and cello properly.

I've had the same welts before but never this bad. Especially not itching.

Cheers!

Might try any combo of these:

Take some benadryl.
Hopefully you've rinsed off the rosin with strong soap.

Take a cold bath.

Try oatmeal paste (mix plain oatmeal with water and slather it on, let it dry, rinse off).

Right after it happens if you dump white vinegar on it, it'll take some of the sting away (and you'll smell like a salad). Vinegar worth a try too even after.

Try dumping the original brown type listerine on it if you've got any (not the colored stuff, the brown stuff-colored has sugar). Even the generic works as long as its brown.

Hand sanitizer may help (it's the alcohol in it) too, just don't
drown yourself in it!

Take Benadryl and go to bed .

I'm allergic to pine, dust mites, and several other contact allergies. My dog is allergic to a bunch of stuff too, all of the
above remedies are things I do to both of us when the itching starts. Yes, you can give a dog benadryl (go by weight!).

Might want to wear long sleeves, two layers next time . Good luck, hope the itching stops!

If your allergy is to rosin, it would be risky to play violin. You could inhale some of the dust, and that could be far worse than a reaction on your skin.

i'd give up. just go home
I used to live in British Colombia, beautiful mountains and lakes and great weather. It was heaven. But I'm allergic to a type of plant that only grows out there on the west coast, and it gave me major breathing problems (think asthma). So, back to Ontario I went...

I have a massive allergic reaction to poison ivy, oak & sumac. I have to do Rx doses of benadryl as well as skin treatments, oatmeal baths and poultices work best. Once the blistering stops I use aloe vera gel until it goes away.
I am starting to itch, durn U Fassa, Good luck.

You could also be so bad at playing the violin that you got allergic reactions as soon as you play. I'm just sayin
