I had no comeback to this...

The other day, I was talking to a guitarist. He seemed like a reasonable guy, and had been playing guitar for ten years. I mentioned to him that I played bass and his friend then said "oh really? I'd like to play bass!" The guitarist was quick to say, "Bass is easy, you'll pick it up in a week."
Getting defensive, I said to him "Like you would know". He gave me a look and then stated he had been playing bass for eight years.

...ooops...

There's a difference between a bassist and a guitarist who can play bass. He was no doubt the latter of the two, with that kind of comment.

Well "picking it up" and playing it *well* as a bassist are two quite different things : ) And as Nick Kay says: +1.

I would just say, oh cool.. Can I hear some of your playing on CD/myspace??
Etc... you can generally gauge a player from a wanker in a few minutes of talking shop...

Obviously he didnt play very good or he would have realized that bass is the best and he would still be playing.

Wouldnt it be funny if you played a 6 or an 8 string bass, and someone said that to you

After the guitarist's "eight years" comment, look at him and say "Really ?" Then look back to the friend and say "Well, obviously you can't pick it up in a week."

I know. It's far easier to come up with an appropriate rejoinder when sitting at a computer in calm, impersonal reflection than it is at the moment and on the spot when it's directed to you personally.

A week? It only take me a few seconds to pick up my bass.

Yes it is true anyone can play bass and anyone can play guitar for that fact, but that don't mean they are any good at it.

First of all he just a "guitar player" (one in zillion) ... so does what he said does matter? Will it matter a 100 years from now?

If he picked it up in one week what was he doing with the other 7 years and 51 weeks?

Did he just pick one up 8 years ago, play it for a week then think 'Awesome, now back to guitar!' And be done with it?

Maybe he hasn't played one since...

It's all maths, people.

It's very easy to learn, hard to master. Yeah, you can pick it up in a week, but don't expect to kick ass immediately unless you're crazy talented.

Is this guy's picture in the dictionary next to "guitard"?

A reply: Yeah, some people have one week's experience a thousand times.

I don't see what the big deal is.I would agree that it doesn't take long to "pick up" playing bass, it's certainly easier to become passably-ok on bass than on guitar.
