I hate pawnshops.

Went to a pawnshop last week because I needed money to get my car fixed (tire fell of while going down the road). I bring my Traben Array 4 along with my IBZ15 practice amp to get the money needed.

They offered me 30 bux for the amp (not to thrilled but it was acceptable.) and 40 for the bass. Now granted it's got a chip in the paint and a loose nob, but considering that it's 400 new (which is a 100$ jump from when I bought it) I think it's worth a little more then 40 bux. Eventually after haggelling with them about it I talked them up to 105 for the bass and still 30 for the amp. I still feel ripped considering that I have to pay 200$ to get them both out of hauk (which btw is monday. I have the money in hand so YAY)


anyone ever actually have to put a beloved bass into a pawnshop and actually get somewhat of a decent deal out of it.

just look at the bright side - the less they paid you, the less you have to pay to get it back. Car is fixed and bass comes home on Monday; you got the necessary funds and the pawn shop makes a few bucks for the loan - everybody wins

An honest pawnshop should give you about 15% of the value of an item.
This is how he makes a living you know. I'd probably loan my cats, my car and my wife before loaning my bass.

Yah, i tried to pawn my '78 P-bass, and the guy wouldn't even give nme a hundred for it. I left and later took it to a proper music store and got $500. Even at
that I think i got ripped. He asked how much I wanted, I said $500 ( I was desperate for cash), and he said "Done!". Didn't even haggle. I think I could have gotten twice as much, but as I said I was desperate. You won't get the full worth of your instrument at any music store, but it's still better than a pawnshop, if there's no chance you will be buying it back.

You didn't get ripped if YOU named the price at $500. Chalk it up to your own...well, whatever you want to call it.

A few things. It's spelled hock, not hauk, bucks, not bux ,and knob, not nob.

Also, if you have to pay $65 interest on a $135 loan for only 2 weeks you are either getting seriously ripped because I'm fairly sure making that much on such a short term loan is considered illegal by US law. Or else you are exaggerating some of the amounts you claim.

In my experience a pawn shop will front me up to about 30-35% of the value of the item I bring in and charge me only about 15% interest for the loan. So for $135 I'd pay back about $155-ish. I would need about a $400 item to get that kind of loan.

You're right, not really a ripoff, mostly a sense of desperation and wanting to make sure of a sale. Also a lack of knowledge about the true value of my bass, as well as inexperience at selling a bass. Basically I knew I had screwed myself when he agreed to my price as eagerly as he did. Again, I still did better than at a pawn shop.

I have found that you can get great deals on used gear at pawnshops. If, on the other hand, you are looking to walk away with money then maybe not so much.

My guitar player once put his 65 fender tremolux in a pawn shop to get rent money. His dad happened to see it in the shop, knew it was his sons and bought it just to scare the sh*t out of him. It worked well.

You normally don`t find really awesome deals though(in my experience).When I was much younger my Dad ran into some problems and pawned his 69 Gibson ES-175d and 74 Gibson Les Paul Custom for $200 dollars each. Then through a series of crappy happenstance he never paid to get them out and so lost them. I never saw them hanging up in that pawn shop. I`m almost positive that when they run into really interesting items they have some kind of network of collectors to move these things out at top dollar. That`s why you normally don`t see those kind of gems chilling on the walls of pawn shops. Interesting side note: through pure luck I happened to run across my Dad`s 74 Les Paul after 11 years and at least 3 different sets of hands. You better believe I sold some stuff to snatch that up!
