Yeah, thats the way to a promising bass playing career for certain. And I bet a band that would advertise for a bassist like that is REALLY goin' places.

I read an ad once that said.

"No bassists, please. Looking for Guitarist to Play Bass."

Sounds like a statement that I heard the other day. "It can't be as hard to play as a guitar, It only has four strings."

Hello from Des Moines!

Bassists in Des Moines are kinda slim pickins.

What instrument is easier to learn and more multi-faceted, requiring more time to become decent at in order to play acceptably in a band; guitar or bass? The answer is pretty easy. And if you're honest enough you'll admit the truth.

Talking to a kid the other day at Sam Ashe's across the street from the Hollywood GC and he claimed that 'good' bass players were as scarce as hen's teeth out here in LA.

On the other hand, much of the current AltRock shite has bass lines mimicking guitar riffs.....

I could understand an ad that read "No guitardists please. Looking for a bassist to play guitar".

Might be a more stable band. + you'd have 2 PAs and twice as many bookings.

Bass is easier to learn quickly. Period. But, it takes ten minutes to learn to play chess... and years to master it.

Absolutely. I do believe that bass is easier to pick up then guitar, but to master Any instrument takes many years of hard practice and dedication. The entire "more strings equals more skill" argument is pointless and stupid, imo.

Yup. You can still play power chords with a 50 string guitar and root notes with a 80 string bass. There are only more strings to choose from.

Yes, well, any band that would post an ad like that is obviously NOT looking for any musicians who want to master a musical instrument. If that's all they think of the bass and bassists then I can only imagine that the rest of the band is pretty lame. Most of us have played the bar circuits enough to know that 90+% of the bands "with gigs scheduled" SUCK...period. Having gigs only means that you are either the only band available on the date/time needed, you're the lowest bidder, you know someone who's doing you a favor, or you're a group of push-overs who are willing to put up with alot of crap, etc. Having gigs doesn't necessarily mean that anyone thinks you're any good. We all know this.

The nice thing is that for those musicians who are looking to make a splash in Des Moines, this band won't be any competition for you.

I see a lot of this stuff going on. Even more popular is a band simply not having a bass player. Or, the bass player is the last link in the equation. For myself, I need a solid drummer to make a killer rhythm section. You can always tell the bands that comprised the rhythm, not as enjoyable to listen to for some reason. Some of my favorite/enjoyable bands I have been in started with myself and a drummer and the rest came together later. Took longer, but man was it worth it!

it's more like Go

The game of Go. Very simple rules- no moves, you just put the stones on the board's grid. But, like bass, it's all about where you put them and using the empty spaces.

...actually, I'm of the opinion that bass is one of the more difficult instruments to learn to play convincingly, simplye because so much of it is based on feel.

I also play a couple of other instruments - among them guitar and saxophone - and I find that these 'real' instruments can be played convincingly with nothing but raw technical chops - and chops can be learned by anybody, if they simply put in the effort.

Bass, on the other hand, requires a feel, a groove, and no amount of chops will cover up a the fact that a player is lacking that immaterial special something - in fact, I find that when a bassist attempts to cover up his lack of groove with chops, it just ends up making his performance worse.

And no matter how hard you try, you can't teach groove - you can point a student in the groovy direction, but if he doesn't have it, he doesn't have it.

I think bass is too hard, so I opted for the Triangle.
