Ever since I joined TB back in January I cant stop buying, selling and trading basses. What has TB done to me?? I have been thru less basses than that the entire time I have played bass (11 years). It doesnt look like im the only one either.

I'm the same way. I'm pretty particular with what I will play live so I'm always switching it up.

That would make you a dealer! BTW, how many wives?

Went with my 20 year old last week to buy a used Epiphone Les Paul for $170 and this guy lets us in the house (nice house, nice cars) and in the back ground is a room of gear - like Guitar Center - I can see 4-5 basses and enough amperage to power all separately. All Fender. Pulls out another, Precision early 80s Elite, another '58. Another guitar nearby. Turns out he's a dealer on Ebay.

Then there's my BL - trying to "find" the perfect electric after a career on Acoustic. So far, and this is just at practices and gigs, I've seen at least 5, and he's not a lead player..... Strat, Teles (2), one is Fender, one is Squire, +2 Epiphone 333s (like a ES335). - oh yea + he owns a Hofner bass for flaky bass player emergencies. Again plus more amperage than axes.

Gees, all of a sudden my house is bursting with GAS. 3 players.

If I had the money, I might be like you as well, hehe.

I think there is nothing wrong with trying out lots of basses, eventually, you might find the ultimate bass for you.

I used to think "give me a fender and I'm done" but lately, I got very intrested in trying every bass out there, to see if it does something for me or not. There's lots of intresting stuff out there

I look at it this way. being a happily married man,...I can't "sample" all the lovely ladies the world has to offer anymore. However,...I can, with a clear conscience, hold and fondle every tempting bass my old eyes fall upon.

Just look on it as satisfying your wanderlust without wrecking your homelife. Hell,..your wife, if you have one, should be encouraging it!!!

+1 and its always great if you can try out the basses first since many basses are being bought without actually having been tried out. I think you are getting a lot of valuable experience comparing their feel, tone, construction, etc. If you have the money to go through many to find your one keeper then more power to you

I'm curious what you guys do about the women. I found a bass I'm going to pick up tomorrow. But this will be bass 4. I'm getting to well you need to sell 1 of them from the wife. What's the best way to work your way out of that one lol?

It is because of this dang forum! I was happy for many years with only 3 basses, and since discovering Talk Bass I have bought and sold dozens and now have about 20. There is always something new or different being discussed here and it makes me crazy to try it. I am really trying to control it but it is so difficult.

TalkBass causes GAS that is for sure.

It may also be that we are at a point in our lives where we have become more particular and insist on searching for the perfect match ( in a bass).

Tell her what they'll be worth 20 years from now. Never sell them.

I use all of my own money, and I dont mean my money that i get from my job because that goes straight to the bank. I buy and sell alot of stuff and do side work. So my money is MY money and she normally lets me do what I want with it.

You are 100% correct. There is always something popping up in the classifieds that you just dont see anywhere else and you instantly have that "OH MY GOD I GOTTA HAVE IT" feeling.

I know how it feels. In two years I've bought and sold upwards of 300-400 guitars and basses. I've had maybe 25 keeps over the span and still only hold 8 of those 25.

It has done immense things for my ability to discern tones and differences between preamps, models, ages, brands, pickups, configurations, etc.

I say about 75% of tone is in the hands. BUT, this gives you more incentive to find a bass out there that reacts favorably to what your hands are doing. See? Now you can keep buying/trying more basses

And to the OP, nothing is wrong with you unless you are wishing you still had some of those basses and/or you are losing big bucks.... Otherwise, have fun!

I'm the same. I've been searching for the perfect bass. But I've since realised there is no such thing, so I've splashed out on a beautiful and very good quality German 'wick, and I'm gonna try to keep the reins on my GAS from now on

There is only one that I wish I still had and that is my q5. As a matter of fact it's in a ft thread right now in the classifieds but I don't have the cash to buy it back or anything he wants to trade it for. But I never loose money. 9 times out of 10 im making money on them. Yes it is quite fun always trying different basses.
