I just sat my Rockschool Grade 6 Bass exam.

I have many mixed feelings about my exam today.

As normal I played my three pieces perfectly and everything was going fine until we got to the General musicianship questions.

If you aren't familiar with Rockschool exams, there is a section where you are asked about amplifiers, bass models, tone settings etc; just to show you have opinions, favourites and taste in the world of Bass pretty much.

The examiner asked me (none of these quotes are paraphrased) "So, what is your favourite Bass manufacturer, to be honest you can say whatever you want, you probably know more than me!"

I sat there confused. I just reeled off some obvious ones and said I favoured Fender Jazz Basses (blah blah). He then proceeded to not ask me to construct ANY arpeggios which, I think, is something you should be asked in the exam.

I have mixed feelings about this, he seemed like he had good knowledge of theory but I highly doubt he was actually a Bassist; very confusing.

Anyone had similar experiences?

What is rock school?...I don't know its the greatest thing since sliced bread or a slap in the face to musicians teaching to supplement their incomes.

but if your supposed to know your arpeggios then you should be able to name an arpeggio whenever...and how hard is it to say Cmaj, C-E-G.

haha.

If I had an exam about bass gear I could go on for days. If i had to write an essay on bass tone and gearn and stuff, that would be one long essay.

Rockschool? Like the music school in Philadelphia?

Either way, sound more like a bass tech exam than a bass exam. Did you even play anything?

Edit:http://www.rockschool.co.uk/rsl/index.aspx
Looks interesting. I take it it's some sort of certification that you can indeed rock?

I was thinking of http://www.schoolofrock.com/index.php (The inspiration for the Jack Black movie and the focus of a documentary)
Not to be confused with http://www.therockschool.org/ (Warning: May rock too much for some TBers)

You obviously proved you know the most important thing about basses.
