I knew a bass player who was so bad

That his band recorded all the bass parts, triggered them live, and didn't put him through the front of house.
He never knew, but everyone else did.

How awful.

He argued with me once because my band was "headlining" (whatever) and his wasn't. I was so tempted...

I would hope he buckled down & practiced like crazy. Otherwise, why would they bother to even keep him? Someone's gonna hit a wrong trigger & begin the wrong bassline. (Remember Ashley Simpson's mishap on SNL?)

I would love to have a gig like that. No responsibility, no stress!

They either really liked him...or really hated him!

I still don't see the point of keeping him. I mean, if a musician watches his hands, they're definitely going to spot a difference between what's going through the PA and what he's doing on the bass.

An image that went through my mind is those musicians who play alone at restaurants. Sometimes they bring along a keyboard or a footpedal device to cover their bass-part. I think this band should have done that.

On the flip side, what if the rest of the band is exactly the same? Maybe nobody in the band is actually playing live. Dear, dear... Setting themselves up for a Milli Vanilli incident.

Keeps them from looking like losers who couldn't find a bassist.

I think you'd be surprised how many big name acts do this.
