I need to vent about my guitarist

Sign in to disble this ad
Okay so we had 2 nights of gigs back to back one week(friday and saturday nights) and our guitarist said he "forgot" about it. We believed him because he is getting stressed over work and moving and stuff. Now tonight he does the same thing. But this time we don't believe him. Just like this time he is at work when we are texting and calling him. I personally came into his place of work and told him to get is butt out and set up. He wouldn't do it and said he knew Jake was calling. So I guess he was ignoring our phone calls and texts. He said he had to put in his 2 weeks of work so he could quit. Stupid reason. He hates the place. Why should he give a crap?

We have somewhat of a following(as much as you can over here anyway) and I hate HATE HATE calling gigs off. It makes us look unreliable and careless. I told my drummer we should just jam for our 3 hour gig. For some reason he isn't comfortable with that. I don't know why because ALL of our songs are jammed. Which also prohibits any last minute sub for a guitarist. That and most guitarists here aren't good at all and most play metal(we are a fusion jam band).

This is pissing me off.

Thats why they are called guitards.
The guitard in our band likes to spend the week in between practices learning to play and sing covers that nobody else wants to play(were an original band) then has the audacity to say he hasnt worked on our new songs and dont want to play them because he dosent have vocals written.

Kick him out, find a good keyboardist. This has kept many of the bands I've played in alive.

It happened again. Today since our drummer was working I had to contact the place for the performance for today to see if we could still play. They said yes so I contacted my 2 band mates about being there and whatnot. Our guitarist then texted the drummer saying he wouldn't be there. That's it. Didn't say why or anything. So now our drummer has to go over there and cancel today's date along with the 6th and 7th of August.

Mine is the oposite, he will constantly bombard you reminding you that practise is on, I counted and got 26 text messages reminding me about rehersal! I know that it is better to be safe then sorry but 26? Too far.

Hmm. I'm not working. Maybe I should move to ND. You're looking for a guitarist?

I'd be pretty unhappy if I were you.

Fire the guitar player and start playing as a duo, ala early nomeansno or lightning bolt.

1) You should always give a crap about that stuff. Quitting without notice WILL come back to haunt you later. Doesn't matter if he likes the job or not. They bothered to hire him and pay him when they didn't have to. He's right to give them 2 weeks notice.

2) Sounds like he wants to quit the band but is too much of a sissy to say so. He's hoping if he ignores the problem (you and the band) it will just go away. He'd probaby rather have you guys fire him (and he'll pretend to give a crap at first) then to have to actually tell you that he wants to quit. Either that or he has a really bad case of stage fright.

They dont call them guitards for no reason...
In another thread, I talked about the guitard from my old band.
We had a month to write and get down 6 songs for a gig, and he just wouldnt do anything to get the ball rolling for the gig...
I wanted to rehearse twice a week, but we agreed on once a week. On one of those weeks, I got from him 'I am all jammed out man'. Now, he was unemployed during this time too, and just sat around all day smoking pot. From memory it was the third week we were meant to have of rehearsals when he said this, but I kicked him in the ass and made him rehearse. He wasnt happy about it.
F'n guitards man...

Yeah, this seems pretty cut and dry here. Cancel all upcoming gigs and fire his sorry butt. It's one thing to be stressed over work and other personal issues, but this guy is just completely inconsiderate and he's dragging your bands name through the dirt. Clearly he doesn't care about the band and probably wants to get fired anyways.

We got it all worked out now. We are going to have a final show at one our garages and sell out the last of our CDs and go out with a bang. It was pointless to fire him because me and him are both moving soon so the band is breaking up anyway.
