I think I need to buy a clue.

I play in this four-piece, acoustic, classic rock band and have noticed that I'm the only one promoting our shows. We all have myspace, facebook, twitter, and a local website to post on and they post quite often about all sorts of stuff, just not about the band or our shows. I finally got around to asking why that was and here were the replies:

--I just don't think it is cool to go begging folks to come to your gigs.

--I don't feel comfortable using my standing in the community to promote the band.

--I am just too embarrassed by how sloppy we are to actively encourage people to come see the band.

I'm thinking it is time to go shopping for a new band.

Sounds like they lack the initative. Tell them to get off their whale-sized butts and actually do something for the band. I find that having a gun helps slightly.

Seriously though, sounds like they just don't have it in them. Happy shopping!

You raise some interesting questions:

At what point are you (individually or the band as a whole) good enough to book a gig?

If you do not feel you are good enough, haven't you committed a form of fraud by booking the gig at all?

And, finally, if a tree falls in the woods and kills a beaver, is that justifiable homicide?

If that's true, my band must be the biggest bunch of criminals on the music scene.

My 2 cents (this is directed at the other guys): if you're getting gigs, promote 'em. If you don't think you're good enough to be worth promoting, stop gigging and get back in the rehearsal room until you are.

And there's a difference between promoting a gig and begging folks to come.

The average band member's abillity to conduct business is a lot lower than their ability to conduct electricity! I frequently want to test this.
Be in lots of bands/sinarios until you find people who work.
