So we're in the van last weekend, on the way as a family somewhere, and my 11 year-old daughter is enjoying the recently-granted privilege to ride shotgun. She grabs one of my CDs and slides it into the player. She then cranks the volume up and settles back into her seat.
My wife (who is not a fan of the stereo being THIS LOUD) immediately covers her ears and makes a face at me in the rear-view mirror. She then informs my daughter that the radio is "too darn loud" and that she needs to turn it down immediately.
"But Mom", my daughter replies, with a smile at me, "it's 'Vicarious' by Tool. It's supposed to be loud."
I am so proud...

The oldest is always switching my music off to put hip hop radio pop schlock on. My son (12) is just starting to get into music, so he's cool with it, but the 14 year old will get in the passenger seat and ask if she can put Zeppelin or something on. I love it.

I too am proud, even tho she kinda passes on Zeppelin.

My daughter generally has her Zune on as I may put a CD in and leave it in there for 3 weeks. The CD could be anything: ska, classic rock, newer stuff I'm learning for the band, etc.

BnB | We just let our Sirius subscription lapse, but prior to that, it was on all the time: in the beginning, pretty much 'All Radio Disney all the time' (for my youngest) - but my Daughter and Middle son - when we weren't listening to CDs - listened to just about everything. Lithium (grunge-era), Octane (Modern Rawk), Boneyard/Deep Tracks, Outlaw Country - you name it.
It always (and still does) brought a smile to my face whenever one of the kids asked 'Daddy, that was cool - who is that? Can I get that on my iPod?'
It's even better now that the daughter is taking guitar lessons. Latest request from the daughter:
'Daddy, can you teach me how to play 'Cinnamon Girl'?

| | | | My guitar player's daughter is about 12 or so. When she was nine, she opened for our band at Memorial Day show downtown. We backed her up, and she did four original tunes (that she wrote completely) and Pat Benatar's Hit Me With Your Best Shot. She played guitar on the original tunes, and they werent bubble gummy songs either, but really heavy rock stuff in Drop D. She's got a really great appreciation for real rock music!

My son is 14 and obviously he has his own music that he listens to. But his iPod has as much of "Dad's" music as it does "his" and when we're in my car he asks which CDs I have in there and and he'll pick out his favorites to listen to. My wife listens to mostly what you'd expect a middle aged suburban mom to listen too, but she's also a talented classical clarinetist and has a lot of orchestral and wind ensemble music in her car. She's getting him turned on to some of that too. He's been first trumpet all three years in his middle school jazz band and that's also gotten him into some of the jazz I have (blues too).
Yeah, he listens to stuff I don't care for, but that's OK. He at least appreciates other music as well so I'm happy he's musically well rounded. Sure, there's a lot of complete crap out there but if you turn off the radio there's also a lot of great music out there, in all genres.

In my car, it's CDs. We listen to George Strait, James Brown, Sam & Dave, Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan (She loves "Hurricane"), George Thorogood, and Frank Sinatra. To name a few. Her comment on Frank's music the other day: "This stuff makes me want to dance."
She is getting a broad, and good, music education, I think. We shall see in a few years.
