Not to say that there is NEVER an instance where you have to go during a set, but if you go BEFORE you go on stage and aren't drinking like a fish you'll be OK 99.9999% of the time. In 40+ years I've never had to leave the stage to go to the bathroom.

I had an urgent call mid-set a LONG time ago (early 90's) at a bar we played regularly. Very friendly crowd, very crowded. I was drinking lots of free beers, felt it coming on and knew I wouldn't make it to the end of the song without pulling a Fegie. Fortunately I was using a wireless - so I walked out into the crowd to the bathroom went in and without missing a note, took care of business. Finished, flushed and made it back to the stage before the song was over. There was some clever use of open strings and brief rests in the song, to say the least.

Lesson learned! Pee before the set - no matter what. My situation worked out 'ok' and while I did feel like I made the best of a bad situation, I also felt like a total amateur.

I also hit the head between sets every single time, and I had only had two beers that night, but for some reason, I just really, REALLY had to pee. It was about halfway through a two-hour set.

I have not had this happen to me yet but I'm sure one day it will happen. Some of those long sets without breaks can be annoying.

Playing a bar gig 2 weeks ago and in the middle of a song the drummer bolts his riser and sprints to the head at the back of the club. We keep playing. The lead guitar immediately racks his guitar and jumps behind the drums and cranks like hes been there for years. We had no idea he could play drums (he
hadn't since he was 16 and he's 50 somethin now).
The drummer sheepishly comes back, sees what happened, and picks up the lead guitar. He finishes with a damn good
approximation of the song. (another surprise)
Too much beer before the set, we find out.

Almost nobody in the house noticed any of this and they kept
dancin the whole time.

We gave the drummer a box of Depends next gig LOL

Then, while the roadie is playing, the bass player whips it out and takes a piss on the side of the building! He finishes up, shakes and puts it away, then grabs the bass, jumps back into playing the song without skipping a beat, and they both run back into the club. Needless to say, he got a standing ovation from all of us. Quite possibly the most entertaining part of the night.

That's the best thing about having a wireless rig. Saved me many times.

Ah Yes. I for one have a very strong bladder, However the lead guitard for one of my bands does not. Quick back story for the night: We were playing our first gig together in this band, it is the type of band in which you learn your part and show up to play. We are all quite comfortable with this format as we are all seasoned. But I digress. End of first set and we get a request for My Maria. Neither myself or the rhythm guitarist had played it before. Lead was giving us chords on stage when he realized what was about to happen, he knew he wasn't gunna make it to the end of the song, and wasn't willing to let the last song of the set self destruct. In his words, "I thought I might be able to let a few drops out, and no one would notice, but once I started I couldn't stop". LOL. So he turned his back to the crowd and took a knee in front of the kick drum. Song over, he laid his PRS on the floor and bolted out the door.

Simple.

Most drummers are into drums and think all good shows have a classic "drum solo" section that is an extended show-off sorta thing that is at least a few minutes long. They LOVE doing this crap.

So, we simply walk off. The inside gag is deciding HOW LONG we keep the poor guy out there bashing away.

Years ago I was playing in a dive bar in Dallas with a Southern-Rock band that also had my college roommate on guitar. He had just bought himself a new wireless and was letting me use his old one. Both of us had had too many beers and needed to use the head. We waited for the keyboard solo in "Oye Como Va" to start, then both jumped off stage (still playing), ran to the bathroom, slung our guitar/bass around our backs (both of us use straplocks), and did our business. He was lucky since nobody missed the guitar for the moment. I had to use my left hand to take care of business and the right hand to reach back and try to keep tapping out the bassline.

Fortunately it was late in the night, and nobody cared at this place. There's been one or two other times that I've had to tell the band "We need to take a break" because I thought I was about to be sick on stage. Once it was from eating some really sketchy pasta too soon before the gig. My rule of thumb now is no matter what the gig is, no foods that might be "unsafe" closer than 2 hours before downbeat.

I had a close call about a year ago. We just started an hour and a half set, and I got the "have to go right now" feeling. Unfortunately, the bar was packed and the bathroom was all the way in the back. I toughed it out the entire set. I was wearing dark jeans, and did wonder for a minute if I just went right there, would anyone notice? Haha
It was the most painful hour or so I can remember. I couldn't even move on the stage. Just stood there, wincing.

I was playing guitar in a cover band,Last chorus of the last song of the second set the bass player makes a run for the bathroom. were all looking at each other like *** just happened. He couldnt make the last minute of the song. Next show, first song second set were getting ready to go back on he runs outside for a smoke brake. We played the song with out him. That was his last show with us but cutting him pretty much killed the band.

He also use to pass out mid song at practice. Standing up. You knew when it was coming from all the wrong notes he was playing. We usually cut his amp off as soon as he would start nodding off other wise he would wake back up for a few second and start playing again.

Could always be worse. 2x in the last 5 years I ate something for lunch that decide mid 1st set it would not wait for our break. The 1st time our singer also strummed acoustic so I said do an acoustic number. Recently in my new band, they knew I wasn't doing well.
I used the restroom 3x during setup and sent the singers gf to the drug store for some Imodium. We got through 3 songs and I put the bass on my stand and didn't even say a word to the band. It was embarrassing but far less embarrassing than if I didn't.
