hi all,
last night i went to see DEVENDRA BANHART, great band, great music... however, they guys in the band had an argument on the stage and they left devendra alone, so he asked the public if anyone could come up and sing... just a asong of their own...
this went on for at least 3 minutes, until a girl finally came out to sing an awfull song about dancing butterflyes....
men, i´ve been playing for years, and latetely i´ve been working on my "solo" music, writing songs and singing them... i feel like a total ashhole... a loser, a phoney, it was MY chance AND I LET IT GO!!!
im so angry at myself... since last night i´ve been thinking about selling all my stuff and get away from music... whats the use of it if i dont have the guts to play... i feel like a whorthless piece of ****. i coudnt get up, i coundt talk, i jsut started sweeting like a pig and felt my heart pumping out of my chest...i thought i would faint... |

I find it is probably easier to play live as a band if you are just starting out and need to get over stage fright. At least when there is a few people on stage with you, you don't feel like everyone is just staring at you all night. |

i don't think you have missed that much LOL.
but, beside kidding, what would have you expected if you went to the stage and performed a song?
as you mentioned above: the girl was awfull. maybe she was'nt a singer at all. some poeple pretending to be singers because they are singing in the car or under the shower.
you are a musician and you know what are your skills. if you want to perform something you want maybe to rehearse before and not f*** up on stage. beeing a musician doesn't mean beeing always available for the audience. not everybody have the balls to just go on stage and do something. beeing musician doesn't mean beeing a entertainer.
just my two cents

Yer time will come. Don't worry about it, chum.

| | | | Dude,
What everybody else said. I mean, for me, I need a few days mental preparation, a thorough check of gear (10 times), a couple of beers at the club where I arrive an hour and a half before my band's set in order to check the scene, the crowd, the stage...and even then I'm nervous as hell until about half way through the second song. I don't think I'm atypical. Cut yourself some major slack. |

i'd suspect that you would have gone over great at the gig...mostly because everyone there was probably stoned out of their minds.
don't fret too much, tho'. there are many ways to get your music out there. believe me, trying to give it up before you're ready is an exercise in futility.
you didn't choose Music - she chose you.

But there will be another time. Be ready to grab it when it comes. |

On the subject of stage fright, that is normal. Almost everyone gets it from time to time. A good cure is to get in a band and practice your ass off, then go play with the band.
If you are certain what you are doing, and you have others to "share" the stage fright, its easier to handle.
In my case I was one of the shyest kids on earth growing up- I used to get physically ill at just the thought of being in front of people, but music and time has pretty much erased that.

| | | | thanks all hi again
im feeling better, and i wanted to thank you all for your opinion, now im trying to turn around all the self-dissapointment... my girlfriend told me to take this as a stimulus in order to be ready whenever a chance like this comes again...
so imtrying to become a "performer", i want to be allways ready to perform, so im going to get a solid repertoty (is it the right word?) and maybe i´ll go twice a week to play in the subway... i believe this can help me to play by playing "anonimusly" to strangers---
im still mad at myself, i just dont seeany of my musical "heroes" acting like i did, wanting to go up and perform and not doing it...
anyway, im gonna try harder
thanks again |

| | | | Thats because none of your musical heroes tell the stories about it. The word is repertoire btw. And dont sweat it. Next time, bring your girl, and have her push you onstage. |

Note to Mr. Banhart: next tour, hire professionals.
Edit: if there IS a next tour!
