Important gig next friday..but what a .....

....mess.

My band, Lirmill (http://lirmill.cjb.net) is playing with three other bands in a pub/restaurant next friday as a part of a cult movie festival which a website called Lagmenning.is is holding here in Iceland.

We met the other three bands some while ago, and decided on what equipment we should share so there will be a minimal pause between bands. It turned out that my band brings the soundsystem (two monitors and an amplified 16channel mixer), the drumset and the bass amp. One of the band brings it´s gee-tar amp.

What I´m looking forward to is that many record executives have been invited so this is a golden opportunity for us.

The mess is this: The gig starts at 9pm, and as you remember, we are responsible for most of the equipment, and since this is a pub/restaurant they won´t let us in with all our stuff until 8pm. So we basically have 1 hour to set up the soundsystem, drums etc. and to do a soundtest with preferably all the bands.

Bahh....it´s gonna be tight I tell´s ya!

Hope the gig goes well....it´s my birthday that night!

At least you have your equipment.

My advice to the geetar player, bring the geetar amp too. Worst thing you want to be troubled with is dealing with someone else's gear, especially when you're trying to get signed.

Try to negotiate with the owner just to get set up.

Just do not compromise on letting the other bands getting a soundcheck in. You don't have time for everyone to do that. Just make sure your soundcheck is good. You have an hour to set up and do a soundcheck...good luck. I don't see how you'll have time for the other bands to get one in too

That would be better...but my geetar player wanted the other amp..

Tried that, but to no avail. They also serve dinner there and do not want the slightest disturbance until 8pm

We were thinking about soundchecking ourselves first, since this is our equipment and stuff. Since there is so little time we might just have to soundcheck the others while they are performing

Phew....this gig got sorted out at the last moment

The gig now starts at 10pm tomorrow night and we get to set up our soundsystem, drums etc. at 7:30pm, so we at least get 2 1/2hrs, which is a helluva lot better than 1hour!

i must admit i think that's a bit unfair - i'd at least try to give the other bands a chance at a soundcheck, even if it's just one song to make sure everything's working

The last gig i did was of a similar disastrous consistancy... we arrive an hour or so before the gig was supposed to start, and the headlining band's guitarist was charging everyone the extortionate sum of nine pennies at the door. he even kicked out the punters that didn't have the change.
but when we get in, we find a fat desk, a harsh load of loud speakers, and sweet f/a else. no connections, a few borrowed amps, and worst of all, nobody who knew how to sort it out... we ended up with some old guy who knew how to hook up radios or something sorting out the connections from amps to desk to speakers, and some kid doing sound, whose only qualification was that he looked like a roadie...
it didn't go so bad, considering the fact that our second guitarist and our drummer pulled out, and we had rehearsed for the measily sum of three hours in the month before the gig... the weirdest gig i've ever seen, let alone played in...

moral of the story... prepare...

Don't get me wrong, you are right that that's the fair thing to do. But if you are opening up, doing a soundcheck is more for the benefit of the room and whoever is running the board. It's not practice. If you are opening up, you need to get the levels set for YOUR playing first. The board op will adjust for the other bands.

Nothing like the drummer's mic not coming up in the mix when needed because the other band doesn't use it.
