Ask him who's going to sub for him when he gets hurt.

I'm just going to remember this and next time I have a better paying gig come up, I'll use it as ammunition for subbing out....

On another note: playing a rock cover gig sitting on a chair with a swollen foot that barely fits in your biggest shoe SUCKS....

If the injury didn't affect my playing the gig (no dance routines) then I wouldn't have told him and just shown up. Then I would ask for a little help with the gear and I'm sure the others in the band would gladly help out (so long as I'm not sportin' an SVT/810).

If it's a friendly situation where guys are playing for fun as well as money you might expect some help.

If it's more of a pro band and guys are really in it for the money - the band leader is more like a boss - time is money - you wouldn't ask your boss for a ride to your day job. In that case if you really want to do the gig don't say anything to the bandleader, take some asprin and find or hire a friend to help with your gear.

Hmm... maybe he had your best interests in mind after all. If it's a rock gig and they're even remotely image-conscious, I could see them preferring to have someone standing up & bopping around.

I'm glad it all worked out, though - hopefully it'll be smooth sailing for a while after this.

Hope you heal up quick. It would be an excellent idea to cut way back on any non-essential activity for a while. (I totally "nuked" my ankle back in school and I'm not sure it was worth delaying recovery and setting the stage for future complications... just to make big band rehearsal later that same day. )

So, this thing is past, but I imagine you'll have more gigs soon. I'd say, Either play direct without a full rig, or ask someone you know to help you set up. It seems like the band leader doesn't want to help you, so don't let him. Let him have his way in not letting you sub out, don't let him have his way in subbing you out. It's not fair to you.
