Injury at Work! Noo!!

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi guys.
I had my first day back at work today after about a month off.
I'm a labourer for a Landscape Gardener. I was really happy to get stuck back in, as the boss had been away on Holiday and I was getting a tad bored/poor in his absence.
So, today was going great, then at about 3o'clock I decided to fall of the edge of a skip and on to my left hand/wrist.
I aws pretty annoyed but thought it'd be ok...
5 minutes later - AGONY
Off I go to Accident and Emergency!
X-Rays and lots of poking from a nurse.
The results are...
No broken bones!!

So I've had to cancel a gig tonight, a rehearsal tomorrow, and possibly gigs on wednesday and thursday...
I'm fairly miserable at the prospect of buggering up my wrist and it affecting my music, but man, I am happy that I have not broken anything! Its annoying that the day job has gone interfering with my bass playing.

I felt like sharing my story with the TalkBass community.
Does anyone else have any stories about injuries preventing Bass-Action from happening??

(ps- I've never been one for using the smileys before, but they seemed to be very applicable to this!?)

I broke my ankle and knee snowboarding two years ago before x'mas.
I still managed to play all my gigs, just had to be rolled in on stage in a wheelchair, the entire winter. I became another pieces of equipment that the band had to load in and out, lol.

Well, that's one way of making an entrance on stage!? And I bet the band loved you for the contribution to the equipment list - especially when I doubt you could help move anything!
That sounds like a harsh injury though...
Certainly trumps mine in terms of inconvenience and pain - but atleast you could still play bass, and lets be honest, on TalkBass, it seems fairly standard to be complete obsessed with bass and for that to be proirity above most else!
Anyway, cheers for the contribution babebambi.

About 10 years ago I broke my left ring finger. I missed a weekend of playing. I also missed a gig one time because I had chicken pox. In 30 years and thousands of nights of performing those are the only times I was unable to play.

I played grass hockey for 7 years as a keeper, and whilst playing for a bad team i enjoyed being the centre of attention, having to throw myself all over the place to keep a clean sheet, it's given me bad knees and bad hips, from all the impacts. that means i can't stand for too much longer than about 20 minutes...

I was playing football last year and broke my little finger, ring finger, and middle finger on my fretting hand. That sucked.

I was recently jumped outside the club I was playing at.It has brought on nothing but hell.Broken orbital socket,****load of stitches, broken pinky finger, couple of broke ribs (a REAL bitch, buy the way), and,a severe ankle sprain. Not bad,eh??Well,it is for me.I'll be off work for God knows how long.DEFINITELY not good,in this economy. My boss is one of those types that if I'm having an off-day......He blames it on me hangin' at clubs on the weekends.God only knows how long I'm gonna be off work.My job is a very physical one(drilling gas wells).I'll definitely be back to playing weekend after next.No gymnastics w/the picking hand though.Slapping hurts like hell.

I was involved in a bar fight about 5 years ago, I guess this can be considered as a work-related injury

We had a pretty unstable yet talented female vocalist back then, she liked to "tease" the men if you catch my drift. One night, a drunk guy hit on her and she responded. Long story short, after the show I heard a "slap" at a distant. The guy was litterally beating the geez out of our vocalist. We went there only to get our collective backsides kicked by an entire semi-pro football (soccer) team. Evidently the guy wasn't alone. I hurt my right wrist and we had to cancel 3 gigs. Then fired the gal and canceled 6 more gigs .

Wow, I was hoping for some stories, but man, some of these are really quite bad...
It makes me even more appreciative of the fact that I have only 'really badly HURT' my wrist and not broken it.
I think this should become a group therapy session so we can all discuss how we feel about these things.
My thoughts are going out to millsbass5. Man, that sounds really harsh. I hope you start to recover soon, get back to work and all that.
Cheers for sharing everyone!

Lightweights the lot of you

In October 1980, an armoured security van pulled out of a sideturning right in front of the Kawasaki Z650C that I was riding down the main road. I summersaulted over the front of the van and landed on the road, breaking the scaphoid in my right wrist, badly spraining the left wrist, breaking a couple of ribs, tearing a gash in my right thigh that needed loads of stitches, breaking my nose and bad bruising all over.

When I was at the hospital getting plastered and stitched I asked them to leave my left fingers clear of the strapping for the sprain and to leave my plucking fingers clear on my right hand. I played a full gig the following night with plaster dust all over my Ric from the cast that went from palm to elbow on my right hand and still strapped up everywhere else.

The scaphoid took ages to heal (probably because your fingers should really be immobilised) and I was in plaster for ages. I was still supposed to be in plaster for a further week after my wedding which was in the following January, but I decided I wasn't going to get married in plaster so I cut the cast off with a breadknife the night before my wedding

Hats off to Jools!
You are 100% MAN!!
Haha...

What a lovely, romantic end to your story too - breadknife liberation from the cast on the eve of your wedding! Beautiful.

I broke my pinky and ring fingers in an incident I don't remember in February. Those 2 fingers were wrapped up and I had to "play" bass awkwardly with 2 fingers until I figured how to take the cast off.

I just came back from wrist surgery. I was out of work for 3 months. I injured it at work so it was a WC claim, no problems there. However, I injured it back in Feb. of '08 and didn't get surgery until Feb. of '09, so I had a whole year of dealing with a torn tendon, torn cartilage, and a torn ligament which, BTW, was so badly torn it was not fixable. Even up to this day I'm feeling a tearing sensation when I move my wrist a certain direction but hey, what are you going to do? I gotta make money. I couldn't play bass for a few weeks but I was going insane from the itching so I ended up ripping my cast off. I ended up recording an entire CD with a group I worked with over the 3 months I was off. The doctor said that playing bass was therapeutic and would help strengthen my tendons as long as I didn't lift anything.

capnsandwich, that's the kind of positive spin we're after! Injury to your wrist - Play some Bass to fix it!

Right, where's my bass...

Fair play though for keeping positive and playing though. Like you said, what are you gonna do?
