So on January 9th my band is playing a battle of the bands. The winner gets to play 1 set at a 3 say event with 3k+ people. Not really a big deal, and we are expected to win. If we don't it's cool, but it would be a huge surprise. Why is that you ask? the answer is somewhat simple.

See, last year, WE were playing all 3 days at the event, and were the judges at the battle of the bands. Coincidentally, the band who won the battle last year is playing all 3 days, and is the judge this year.

I won't go into any details about the battle or the 3 day event, or even what circle of people are involved. The only reason we aren't the judges and playing all 3 days again is pure "politics" Suffice to say that we know basically who the competition will be, and it should be somewhat easy for us to win.

Anyway, anyone else have a similar story? just thought it was a funny turn of events.

I've got a similar story. Early last spring my band was asked to play a BOTB. We didn't have a whole lot so we said yes and sold the 20 tickets that were required. This particular event was 90 minutes from our houses, so we didin't think we'd have a chance. Plus, a lot of the other bands were from that area, and were pretty big draws. We were the total underdogs.

We played 2nd out of 6 bands, and we did pretty good. 2 of the other bands thought so as well, and proceded to tell everyone to vote for us. We still didn't think we'd have a chance.

The next day we found out we won by a pretty big margin (we had 65 votes, and the closest band had 30ish). We got a pretty good chunk of change and a show the next week opening up for some larger acts. That show had about 300 people

The same place hosted another BOTB a few months later, and barred us from entering. This was because we came out with the largest margin of victory in the history of those events. We have gone to headline and play there almost every month since.

This is why I don't like battle of the bands. The decisions usually don't have much to do with the bands.

Just a coincidence, but I'm listening to "The Shadow" while I'm reading your post.

Now, back to your regularly scheduled program...

Ha, battle of the bands, they're so annoying!

My band entered and won one in august, the biggest one in the area, and we were pretty damn proud! The winner was meant to play a second set but 2 of our members are brothers and were at a festival together. If they didn't get back to the festival by 12:00pm they were locked out. So we played out set, won, THEN they told us about the second set.

Now I'm a guitarist aswell as a bassist, and the singer (who stayed) and I do acoustic sets aswell, and I had my electro-acoustic with me, so we offered to do that instead.
Apparently though if you have come over 150 miles in one day to do a BOTB, providing the house drum kit as well, even if you have to go back after the show is called Un-committed! In the end they changed the outcome so we "drew" with another band and they did the second set, despite being REALLY drunk!

The deal was we still got the prizes though, and despite this being from several months ago they still owe us £600, recording time, publicity and a spot on local radio!

God, failures or what!

Actually, no. As I said in my original post, we know who our competition will be, and it will be very surprising if we don't win. I also said If we don't win, it's not really a big deal.

Also mentioned was the only reason we were having to play the battle and not judge it was pure "politics" by the people putting on the show.

Did you actually read the post? I'm sorry, I hate to be rude, but ... really?

And no, I would not post an "OMG WE WUZ SKREWD" post. First, I don't type like that, it makes my brain hurt just trying to think on such a low level. Second, I don't post us winning or losing battles on the internet. We have won our share, and lost our share... sometimes fairly, and sometimes we really were "screwed". The ONLY reason I even posted this was that I found the situation slightly amusing being the roles were reversed from last year.
