Free flowing, melodic tasteful...I usually shy away from that sort of thing as well, for the same reasons :-) this I like although the sound of the hang I always find a bit limited for a lead melodic instrument, no doubting the talent there. Thanks!

Tom,
Check out the funky plastic overlay this guy has on his bass. Kinda reminds me of what you where saying about putting a thicker pickguard on your basses.

Yup. There's no question that helps him play faster.

After years with my Sting Ray and its thick pick guard, I couldn't play basses with pick guards of normal thickness. When I had a humbucker put into a P-bass, I made this pick guard for it. It's twice as thick as a standard one.

Hey Tom, you've probably seen this but if not I thought you'd enjoy it :

A great quote. I like this one, too.

"Sometimes it is better to light a flamethrower than curse the darkness."

This seems like a good idea for crowded nightclubs. As I said, I post things to inspire people, so why not make one for a bass?

What could go wrong?

Hello Tom,

I'm awfully late to this party and I saw that your book is listed on Amazon. I've been a member of Talkbass for a long time, since around 2008 I guess which is when I started playing bass seriously. I got through the entirety of thread 1 but skipped 2 and 3 since it is a bit too much

I just wanted to let you know that this is the longest thread I've religiously followed for a long, long time on Talkbass. Of late, work and life left me less time to play bass and much less time to frequent the site. For some reason, I never posted in the forums. Even when I did have things to say, I never did. I guess I did it thinking, "What does it matter what I think?" Having seen how this thread began and what it became though has convinced me to post here if only to say thanks

I loved reading about your cat. I had two dogs long back, both of which died before their due. One got sick and the other was involved in some kind of accident. I was never able to bury them since we used to let them run around outside while we were out and both times, things happened far off. I guess my mother was also worried about scarring me (I was a kid back then). Never having had that closure, I could never get past it and haven't had a dog since. I finally came to terms with it and like you, came to treasure the years we had together instead of of solely mourning their passing.

I don't want to derail this thread too much with my ranting so I'll let you know that you were able to drive home the message my parents and teachers always tried to teach me about living life to the fullest and enjoying what you have. I will close with a stanza from a Robert Herrick poem that seems extremely relevant here:

Gather ye rosebuds while ye may,
Old Time is still a-flying;
And this same flower that smiles today,
Tomorrow will be dying.

PS: Your thread inspired me to write a short instrumental piece which I will send to you when I get it down on hard disk.

PPS: To the Talkbass community, kudos! This thread seems as good a place as any to tell you that the forums have brought me much enjoyment for the past 3-4 years

Thanks very much. I miss my cat, but I can feel him around. I think he's getting ready to make his next appearance. We're trying to convince him to wait until we've done all the rebuilding of the house where he'll live, but he was an impatient little so-and-so. I assume if he wants to come back, he's going to do when he wants.

This song used to scare me, but now it comforts me.

Tom, will Scott's memoirs be done for publication, or is that a personal project?

'Twill be sold by Schiffer Books, Ltd., for your enjoyment.

Scott has asked me to say nothing publicly about the process or progress, but it will indeed be a commercial enterprise.
