Got a sub gig. 99% of the stuff is classic bar band stuff. I've played all this stuff a million times, as a drummer. Fixin' to head to the woodshed.

COOL! It sounds like you are already familiar with the arrangements, chord changes, start and stop of the songs, etc. That's the biggest hurdle, unless it's some Chris Squire, John Entwistle type of bass!

Sounds like the perfect gig...
Have FUN

40 SONGS IN TEN DAYS? Totally doable. Kick some @$$ man! At least they aren't being unreasonable - "Here, learn all of these original songs while we play them tonight at the gig."

I can email you the original shet music for Gimie 3 Steps on monday if you want.

I've done this 50 songs in 14 days thing and I recommend to keep it simple and not learn every fill and riff and keep it tight with the drummer. I also recommend writing the basic progressions out in Nashville numbers on you cheat sheet. This help me out since they changed about 1/3 of the songs to different keys which could have been a pita if not for the Nashville numbers system.

I had some help from others and it did help to just get somewhat accurate material in front of yourself to learn. transcribing most of the songs will take a long time most likley. I have about 150 songs in my 3 cover bands at your disposal if any are the same.

Playlist.com becomes your friend. You can build a playlist of as many of the songs as you can find, and use it to rehearse on your own...at no charge.

HA!! I was just asked to learn 3 steps!!! I took a sub gig, though I have a month to learn 40 tunes, some I know already. I just moved from doing only originals for many years too trying to get my foot in the door with the local cover scene. I'm finally old/patient enough to actually sit down and learn 40 tunes.

Another site you can use is Youtube. Find videos of each song (if you really want, find videos of people playing the bass track) and make a playlist out of that.

Helped me on several songs throughout my playing.

The structures of songs are usually the hardest hurdle for me. Most bass lines are simplistic, you just need to know where the parts begin & end. Since you already know the structure and you have played the drum lines, it will be much easier for you to do the bass line to it. Basically 4 songs a day - get to it & good luck!

Youtube helped me alot in learning songs as well. I had to learn 36 in a week. Luckily, I'd played guitar on a few in the past and was at least musically familiar with most of them. The videos are great to at least get you in the right spots for the tunes.

I can handle it. In fact, it's actually a good thing. Our band isn't doing anything and I need something to do.

Surprised at the grief Gimme 3 Steps seemed to get. As long as you can put out a tight pentatonic line around D and E, then you're good to go.
