Jam crashing (sort of)

Sign in to disble this ad
So I was at the local AA meeting...(thats gotta be the beginning of a great joke!) and I compulsively check my Iphone to make sure my company didnt crash and burn in the last 3 minutes...and I get an out of the blue Email from some Craigslist drummer I've never actually met..."Dude I lost contact with you but could you jam in an hour?"
...wow-can I jam in an hour? Yeah, OK why not? I finish out the meeting cause life is kinda rough at the moment...and speed home, grab the bass and cable bag, and fly over to the neighborhood rehearsal complex that I turned him onto in the first place...
Then kinda barge in "are you pete?" tell them that due to nanny issues and constraints on her schedule I can only plug in for half an hour...three songs and I'm throwing the bass back in the case and I'm outie!
Felt weird as hell but was fantastic! Don't you wish life was filled with random jamming moments like that constantly?

Short notice

Closest story I have to that...

I had moved from CA to WA and put in aps at the local hardware store among other places. A couple of weeks later, and still jobless, I get a phone call from the store. The first words I hear are "You play drums right?" I'm thinking "Huh?". Then I remember the guy that interviewed me had mentioned that he played in a local country cover band when I had said that I was a musician.

So the short of it is that at 6:30pm I get a call, their drummer has disappeared off planet and they have gig tonight at 9pm! It's a one hour drive, I don't even listen to country, don't have a clue as to the what the songs are, and I'd only been playing drums for less than a year! "It pays $100"

The whole drive there I'm thinking this is insane.

I worked at that store for two years before I joined the Navy

One night I had JUST settled in with all of my stuff in a practice room at school to work out some stuff on upright. I get a text from a piano player that says "If you can come to G's (Jazz Bar) ASAP I have $100 for you."

Practice....money....practice....
....
....money

Played for 2 hours, had a great gig, got paid, then went back to school and practiced

Cool story. Another adventure in jamming.

"...neighborhood rehearsal complex..."
That sounds intriguing. What is that exactly?

I've checked out multiple situations off of craigslist. Sometimes returning for more sessions later. Never had a bad time. It expands your ideas. Shows you who you want to play with and what you want to play.

One time years ago, I was walking down the street to the local 7-11 for a Coke when I heard some jamming coming from a house along the way. I stopped at the curbside to listen to them for a couple minutes. It was a guitarist and a drummer. They saw me lurking at the street and asked me if I wanted to watch them. I said OK, and as I entered the house, there was a bass leaning up against an amp. I said "where's your bass player?" They said he couldnt make it. They asked me if I played bass to which I said "a little". Grab it, man - lets jam! I did. I was 17. They looked liked they were in their 40's. They were real cool. Total simple blues jam, but to this day it was one of those one off experiences i'll never forget.

My whole 12 Stones experience started super crazy like that, they called me and said "Our bassist is done for, we have a day off today, but a sold out show tomorrow, can you make it?" I drove 12 hours overnight down to Knoxville, no soundcheck. Granted I learned the songs already, the first time we played together was the first song of the set that night.
