Our company Holiday Party was last Friday night, featuring the fabulous Bluefish band. This year, the bass player in the band was James East, brother of Nathan. I had the chance to spend a fair amount of time chatting with him (not about Nate), and he's just the nicest guy you'd ever want to meet. We talked a lot about gear and some of the projects he's working in. He's a local guy, he and his brothers grew up in San Diego (when they weren't in Groom Lake).
I had my Drozd with me (the band lets me sit in every year for about a half a set), and left it with him to finish out the last set. It was really cool hearing that bass sound about as good as it could. I got invited to come see them and sit in at one of their local gigs, and I might just take them up on it. It was a totally cool experience.

Cool Deal! Does he have his brothers touch? Your bass looks good. |

| | | | Cool, how would you define his style? Jazzer, rocker, or both?
Also, if your brother is that well known, do you think he gets any pick up gigs of good quality?
Hmmm...
Does he play another instrument besides bass?
Does he have a favorite brand of bass? And, what is yours? Is that his bass in the picture?
Sorry, those were my questions! |

Sorry, those were my questions! | Hey, now I don't feel so lonely.
He's really well-rounded. The band at the party was playing classic to current rock, but he's also a jazz guy here in town. He really plays for the song, but can slap the slab when necessary. He reminds me of Nate by the big smile he wears the whole time he's playing.
He brought a Godlyke 5-string to the gig, a great-sounding bass. That pic is him playing my Jerzy Drozd. He got a kick out of it, and played it the way it should be played. He's got at least a dozen basses (I payed him extra to say that to my wife). As far as my favorite bass, it's probably going to be between my MTD 535-24 and my Sadowsky Modern 5-24 (the 25th Anniversary one), at least sound-wise. As far as looks, not many basses are going to look much better than that Drozd. Here's the Sadowsky and the MTD for your viewing pleasure.

Not to mention those awesome basses you have. Munji, I looked at your profile and you have enough gear to supply 3 or 4 good sized bands. Or you could open your own music store,LOL. Anyway, your one lucky dude. Congrats. |

Congrats. | This is the third year we had this band. The first time I saw them, they were playing a Saturday afternoon gig at a local tourist trap called Seaport Village. They were a four-piece, and I was attracted by the bass player's DB-750 (which is also the very reason I own one). I got to yakking with them on a break and asked if they did corporate, to which they said, "Yes."
So I got their card, on which they called themselves the Troubadours, then called them later and hired them for our company party. Sometime in the next year, their girl singer got snotty with them about money, and the whole band quit. It turned out that the singer owned the name, so they changed to Bluefish and stuck together without her. Bluefish's leader called me to let me know what happened, then I got a card in the mail from the Troubadours asking if I wanted to hire them (the new band) for the party. Well, no, I wanted the guys I hired in the first place.
Now they bring an excellent singer with them, Anna Dowdell, and they're great. Last year, their bass player was a guy named Rod Ratelle, who is a local first-call jazz and rock guy, but apparently he went on to other things, so the lead guitarist brought in James East, who is doing some other projects with him.
Lucky, yes. The harder I work, the luckier I get. I'm very fortunate to have a decent day job and a wife who doesn't get too wound up over my gear habit. I have been selling off some stuff to make room for the new, which seems to help politically. As I've said before, the gear is a psychological mechanism to make up for poor mothering. It doesn't work, so I'm doomed to a life of unrequited GAS.
But before you judge me too harshly, check out Bowlus's inventory.

The only difference is the two of you would be selling "really good equipment". . By the way, what have you got for sale? Or am I asking or looking in the wrong place? It's also nice to have a very understanding wife who can live with someone with a GAS problem. I'm also very lucky to have a good day job and a good wife who lives with my GAS problem. Although, on occasion, I do get the old "rolling eyes" look. I guess maybe I need to sell off a few items.

Anyway, the onliest thing I have for sale right now is my Tascam DA-40 digital recorder. I sold four basses a few months ago, and jt just bought my ADAT. I could sell one of my Radial ToneBone Classics, but that's for guitar, so I don't even have it up.

James also played, or maybe still does with Sergio Mendes.
