Just a bad night

Last night my band and i had our first gig since NYE. It was at a privite club we play once a month good crowd V-day dance and I SUKED! I just need a some fellow TBer support and a been there done that to feel better Overall the gig went well with some high spots and the last set was real cool but i blew the intro on to embarrasing easy songs that i could play in my sleep. Matter of fact all of the songs i know well and until last night i nailed without a mistake all the time at past gigs. For the life i me i just couldnt focus

I had about 4 clams out of 3 long sets but as much as i try to say ...aw..heck nobody will know and its only one gig move on. It kinda still bothers me. I take my playing serious and feel i am a good solid player...need some love fella's

My jazz professor (great clarinetist, 68, plays in pits all the time incld recently the Producers) told the band the other day that he let out a shreek from his clarinet durring a solo run on the gig. The director basically told him that we're all human. Now my professor has the reputation for being perfect in these situations so he has some cred built up. But still... it happens to everyone

Eh, mistakes happen. I'm famous for them, actually. I'm odd, I rarely screw up the more technical songs, but I always eff up the simple ones. It's all mental for me. I let my tiny mind wander, and next thing I know, there's a clambake surrounding me.

Unless it's BAD and I can't recover quickly, I try and just brush it off.

My uncle has a great trick.
"If you play a wrong note, then play it again the next measure so people will think you did the first one on purpose"

Thanks guys....just what i needed. A good kick in the @ss and a hey ...we understand. I do agree with the mind wandering bit. The first clam although i covered it quick is in a slow redundent song that we had just done two slow songs right before it....it was a V-day dance so lots of smoochy slow songs last night. Its a song so easy but i fall asleep almost during it and have to focus on it. i never really watch the crowd and for some strange reason caught myself looking around alot last night......need a drooling duh smilie!!!!

Like everyone else has said "it happens". It happened to me last month. We're an originals band and we were playing one of our new songs. Right before the lead break there's a run that I play for 4 bars. I started it a half step down and drew a blank. I recovered on the last time through.
You just have to shake it off and keep going.

Cheers,
Jim

It happens all the time to famous bands. Big name pros who make millions of $$$ a year all **** up occasionally.

I saw the Pink Floyd in 1988 melt down on stage as an entire group. For about 20 seconds they sounded like a bad garage band. But they pulled themselves together and went on with the show as if nothing happened.

And they still got the long standing O at the end of the night.

I carry the same curse. It's a matter of concentration. If I'm bored, my mind wanders to the cute little brunette, on the dance floor, who really knows how to move.

Seriously... Stuff happens. Blow it off and move onto the next gig.

Dude, that was you? Man, I was there and couldn't believe how much the bass player was messing up. I mean 4 mistakes in a 3 hour set? I was tempted to get up there myself...

Just kidding, it's happens to everyone. Nobody got hurt and nobody probably noticed. You'll do great the next gig.

The worst for me is Roadhouse Blues. The guitar used to take an e x t e n d e d solo and I would zone out..... only to realize we had finally reached the A.

That's it - only other musicians in the crowd, or even only bassists even noticed it.

That was about the first piece of advice I got when I started playing jazz. It works too, if you make the repeat note fit with the other notes.

At least noone died at your gig. Has happened to other bands (Rolling Stones, Pearl Jam).
