The lazy bassist manifesto

Sign in to disble this ad
If you frequently find yourself playing more notes than your guitarist, fire the bum. What's the point of having a guitarist if you can't make him play all the complicated parts?

Bands that play quietly are nice. You don't have to carry as much gear to be loud enough.

You shouldn't have to play solos or jump around the stage to get attention. You should just look good and get all the attention you want that way.

Things like verses and intros aren't always important enough for you to play them. Let the other instruments deal with those.

Pedal tones are great. Pedal tones on open strings are even better. Rests are the best, though.

Write songs that only require open strings, that way your left hand can hold a beer.

Never be in any band smaller than a 7-piece. That way, everyone praises you for "not overplaying".

A slight overdrive can add lots of sustain to your open string plucking, allowing you to play even less!

Buy a loop station, loop one riff, and stand there drinking for the rest of the song.

Anything other than I-V requires too much thought. It's been working fine for 50 years, why change it?

In case no chairs around, rig height should be around 18 - 20 inches, for playing seated.
A cushion on it's top would be perfection

It's a lot less distance to your parents bassment than a gig.

Always play with a drummer that is more talented than you. The other way around is too much work. I'm a bass player not the instructor for the rhythm section.

It is of absolute importance that you drive the largest vehicle in the band. This way, you can sit back comfortably while everyone else loads and unloads for you and still thinks that you are doing them a HUGE favor.

Make sure to use the phrase "Man, this thing only gets ____ miles per gallon" to avoid any suspicion.

Teach your dog to slap the strings with its tail , so you only have to use your left hand for fretting. The right hand can hold the beer or dog treat.

anything more than 4 strings is too much like work!

(and if you can avoid that annoying top G string, all the better)

Don't tune more often than about once every two weeks or so. All that unneccesary stretching just wears the strings out faster anyways.

Always drop tune; transposing sucks.

or

Never drop tune. If there's a note that's too low, don't play it.

Basses are typically too heavy to bother picking up. Consider the triangle instead.

Okay, maybe that`s too lazy
