Lead guitarist's buying bass guitars?

Sign in to disble this ad
Am i the only one that gets really annoyed when lead guitarists buy basses to add to their 'arsenal'? The guitarist in my band recently ame to practice sporting a 60's fender precision. 'I thought it'd be cool to add some low end into my arsenal' he said. I felt disgusted.

Any one else feel this way?

Na - I'm not annoyed if they want to buy one, I'm just annoyed when they think they can play it...

Well, how many of us own guitars? Or drums? Or microphones, Or tambourines? Maybe it would help him to know more about every instrument in the band.

I'm with the others-- I don't know where the offense is.

Are you concerned that he'll start writing a specific part for you? That's what songwriters do.

I wouldn't worry about it. There's a reason why there's an overabundance of guitarists and a dearth of bassists. It takes a certain mindset.

Sounds like a little P-bass envy to me.

I would think you'd be in the vast minority.

I don't and am curious as to why you do.

EDIT: Buy a guitar to add to "your arsenal".

More basses = better. I own a guitar too - my guitar player doesn`t mind at all - in fact he`s using it right now to record some cleaner sounding tracks on our new song.

My guiarist had a P-bass that cost more than both of my basses, but i dont care because he cant play for crap and i like my basses better anyway. Also, i own a guitar and he uses it every time we practice.

The only time I`m annoyed is when a guitarist tunes to drop C or something.
If you want bass - buy a bass. If you need treble - buy six string bass. Buy guitar only if you want to play funky rhythm

Why do you care what he has? Can he play it? Is he expecting to play it in your band?

I play guitar, bass guitar, double bass, mandolin, keyboards, harp and other instruments ... I'm also a damned good singer and composer, and have a decent home studio. Should I sell everything and stick to just one thing? Nonsense.

Hi.

A bit unsure about Yourself, are we?

Doesn't bother me one bit if someone buys some gear, regardless of what it is. If it can be used to improve our performance, even better.

If either of our guitarists, or about any guitarist I know for that matter, buys a bass, I'll outnumber him with about 1 to 10 with guitars anyway .

If You're feeling that he'd be a better bassist than You, then it's time to improve, not to feel insecure and whine. IMHO only of course.

Just my 0.02€

Yeah, that annoys me. My guitarist used to say that he was a guitarist and a bassist. I told him he is a guitarist who sometimes farts around on bass. I say that if you play bass the most then you are a bassist. He quit saying it when I started to say that I was also a guitarist!
