Lead Singer= Lots of Chicks. Guitarist= Lots of Chicks. Drummer= Lots of Chicks....

Bassist = Sausage Fest.

What's up with that. Everytime I go see live music, the women crowd around the singer, guitarist, and even the drummer (when he wasn't driving the van). Then you get to the poor bass player, surrounded by other bass players, checking out his style, bass guitar, rig.... sausage fest.

Why dear god, why?

(before you flame me I must disclose that I have done this. Also, this post is a bit tongue in cheek :P)

Why do we as bass players, fawn over other bass players and their equipement more so than singers, guitarists, and drummers? Your thoughts please.

We don't. I say this as someone who is both a guitarist and a bassist, and who has three decades of experience with musicians who play other instruments. Guitarists spend at least as much time as bass players talking about equipment.

No problems here.To an audience a bass player is another person on stage with a guitar and is no different than a guitarists.

Sounds like you need to own the moment :-)

Never had a problem here.

If a sausage fest is on the cusp, I find another place to be

When I was in a blues-rock band back in the 90s playing hotel bars, I'd always get the drunk cougars come up and start talking to me while we were playing. I guess it's because we were a trio, and the guitarist / lead singer was busy singing, and the drummer was always behind the drum set.

I am mistaken for the lead guitarist often because I play front and center next to the singer,we have our guitars on the ends of the stage and alot of women don't know the difference between a 4 string bass guitar or 6 string guitar.

I dont know, as I dont fawn over anything other than hot ladies...
I couldnt really care less about what gear another bass player is using, at least not enough to strike up conversation with a bassist.

I don't think it's so. Besides, many folks don't know the difference between a bass and a guitar from off-stage. My wife said the other day, "Looks like the color of yours" [my bass], but it was a guitar she was looking at."

I was playing in the same show as several other bands last Saturday in Tryon, NC. I talked with some of the bass guys. So what? We all like to talk shop. No sauge fest about it. And there were plenty of hot ladies to talk to as well, including my wife.

You must be playing the wrong music. No bassists come to my gigs. Well, except for two 19-year-old girls who are learning to play DB who came to the last couple.

If you think the lack of chicks is because you play bass, it's not. Bill Wyman never had a problem with it.

I'll tell you why. On most shows I've played, every band uses the same set of drums and each drummer uses his own snare, kick pedal, and cymbals. Guitar players all think the other band's guitars SUCK. Singers don't even listen to other bands. Finally we, the bass players, are the only ones that appreciate others sound and technique. That could explain the nerds that surround bass players.

In the lack of chicks part I disagree with you because, for starters, women can't tell the difference between a bass and a guitar. That's up to you to make yourself more appealing to them. Remember who was the cute Beatle? Paul!

I can't really say this is true for me because I'm also the lead singer.

Play with some uglier bandmates. In my band in high school, I played with the weirdest-looking guys around. I'm no model, but compared to these guys, I was the only one remotely worth talking to!

I'm a gal and I talk to bassists at shows. However, I can't remember the last time I didn't ask one of them a question or make a comment about gear. Last summer, I talked to one who I thought was sort of hot, but since his GF was hovering nearby, I kept the conversation strictly about his G&L.

FWIW, I also can't remember the last time I was onstage and approached by an audience member who wanted to talk gear, even though I have played plenty of shows where I saw bassists in the house.
