Bassist = Sausage Fest.
What's up with that. Everytime I go see live music, the women crowd around the singer, guitarist, and even the drummer (when he wasn't driving the van). Then you get to the poor bass player, surrounded by other bass players, checking out his style, bass guitar, rig.... sausage fest.
Why dear god, why?
(before you flame me I must disclose that I have done this. Also, this post is a bit tongue in cheek :P)
Why do we as bass players, fawn over other bass players and their equipement more so than singers, guitarists, and drummers? Your thoughts please. |

I say this as someone who is both a guitarist and a bassist, and who has three decades of experience with musicians who play other instruments. Guitarists spend at least as much time as bass players talking about equipment.

Sounds like you need to own the moment :-)

If a sausage fest is on the cusp, I find another place to be

I guess it's because we were a trio, and the guitarist / lead singer was busy singing, and the drummer was always behind the drum set.

I couldnt really care less about what gear another bass player is using, at least not enough to strike up conversation with a bassist.

I was playing in the same show as several other bands last Saturday in Tryon, NC. I talked with some of the bass guys. So what? We all like to talk shop. No sauge fest about it. And there were plenty of hot ladies to talk to as well, including my wife.

| | | | I'll tell you why. On most shows I've played, every band uses the same set of drums and each drummer uses his own snare, kick pedal, and cymbals. Guitar players all think the other band's guitars SUCK. Singers don't even listen to other bands. Finally we, the bass players, are the only ones that appreciate others sound and technique. That could explain the nerds that surround bass players.
In the lack of chicks part I disagree with you because, for starters, women can't tell the difference between a bass and a guitar. That's up to you to make yourself more appealing to them. Remember who was the cute Beatle? Paul! |

However, I can't remember the last time I didn't ask one of them a question or make a comment about gear. Last summer, I talked to one who I thought was sort of hot, but since his GF was hovering nearby, I kept the conversation strictly about his G&L.
FWIW, I also can't remember the last time I was onstage and approached by an audience member who wanted to talk gear, even though I have played plenty of shows where I saw bassists in the house. |
