How would you describe yourself as a bassist, based on this matrix? Also, how would you describe famous bassists?:

Me

Geddy Lee

Lemmy

James Jamerson

Most rock bassists

Les Claypool, of course, would needs a different matrix

well I have always considered myself a very punchy bassist thats melodic when its needed. I consider myself rhythmic but I more do random rhythms with off beats
I do not know where I fit on this chart

All over the place, depending on the song. I think I'm at my best in the upper LH corner of the chart, though.

Nice concept, but I have no clue what you mean by guitar and rhythm. Do you mean lead guitar vs rhythm guitar in style? And if you do mean lead, do you mean lead as in you play solos a lot, are the dominant voicing, or just plays a ton of fills?

Also, how do you define "real bass"?

I think you`d have more success creating a matrix with this terminology:

- Root note bassist (Keep It Simple Stupid) (Ex: Dusty Hill, Tommy Shannon)

Diverges to either:

-- Pocket bassist (plays more funky grooves that revolve around the root, 3rd, 5th, 7th, and uses passing tones) (Ex: Stuart Zender, Verdine White, Robert DeLeo)

-- Rhythmic bassist (plays rhythm guitar like patterns in a style more like a guitar) (Ex: Lemmy, Cliff Burton, Steve Harris)

Comes together at:

- Lead bassist (plays all over the neck and seldom sticks to roots longer than one absolutely must) (Ex: Entwistle)

That's not a matrix, that's a coordinate system.

+1 to this version... The descriptors used in the OP are too vague... cool idea, just not really clear.

"Drive" isn't derived from lead/melody IMO.

Cool idea!
Keep working on it, you'll get it all ironed out and looking good.

well even through the bias that this might have, I can get a certain idea of what he's trying to say. If I had to place myself somewhere in it I would take top left around James Jamerson ( but nowhere near what he was :P ). I like to hold a nice solid foundation but sometimes kick in a little fun and bump it up.

Somewhere right where I'm able to keep rhythm and melody to keep the song on track but still overly active enough to overshadow the guitarist for playing random pointless sols and trying to steal everyone's light so I can knock him down a few pegs and steal his chicks.
