Despite my own personal feelings about B.E.G. and M.S.,

I'm not at all sure that refusing to play two of the most requested songs qualifies as a great attitude for a cover player.

The fact that they ARE two of the most requested songs would indicate to me that they in fact ARE what people want to hear.

Nobody plays those songs because they love them. They get sold because they get bought.

IMHO YMMV

It depends on your crowd. I actually had more requests for Tool songs than anything else. That and Pearl Jam's Yellow Leadbetter... kinda odd. But never had a request for MS, although we did bust out BEG once for a friend of the band, but that was it.

Depends on the situation. I personally have never had a request for either of those songs. Both my bands play (mostly) 90s and newer. We get requests for "Crazy Bitch" and "Amber" all the time.

See sig.

Bands with older members (40+) usually attract older crowds thus requests for MS and BEG are just about an every gig occurance. Tool songs (although I like Tool) would hardly ever be requested or played by a band that plays MS and BEG. In most cases just look at the band and listen to the genre of music and you'll already know what type of requests to make or not make.

I won't play those songs either. I still work in a cover band. On my no list, currently: Mustang Sally, Brown Eyed Girl, Play that Funky Music, Don't Stop Believing. Fine songs, I am just not into right now. You want to play them - knock yourself out. I am not doing it. It's reasonable.
