Live Samples: Yay or Neigh?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey guys, quick question:

So, I don't have any recording equipment. What I had used previously was the guitarist of my old band's home studio, and our band had used the Audiobox live to record through our PA mics.

My question is, is it wrong of me to use live samples of my bass playing? Often times when auditioning I know it is appropriate to include samples... but I'm young, and don't have much out there. I want to start being in a band again, and to prepare I want to master all the recordings I have of myself. The two songs in question seem pretty good quality, even with enough of my bass cutting into the mix, but they are live recordings. Is this frowned upon, for any reason?

I'll post the clips when I get home from work today.

Thanks for the help.

I don't see any problem with it - as long as they sound good and represent your sound and playing well. The worst thing you can do is give someone a recording or link to audio or video that DOESN'T sound good.

I don't like it when bands that cant sing very well on most nights, pre-record their backing vocal harmony parts (when they finally can nail them down) seperately and use them live so they sound all polished.

Totally dishonest, lame and bogus.

...uh, I didn't say that. But, I totally agree with you. My band was all live, didn't even use synth/samples. Raw analog.

To get a handle on how accomplished a player is, I'd rather hear them on live clips.

Sometimes studio demos tell you less about the player's abilities than about his willingness to record and comp 50 takes. (True x 10 when you're talking about guitars or keys.)

Would a cassette tape recorded on a boom box, of just you and a drum machine be acceptable, or is live with a band the best way to show your stuff? I often practice like this, and I think is sounds pretty good (sometimes). It's not like using ProTools where you punch in corrections if needed.

It's literally a recording of my band playing an outdoor show. We recorded the PA out -> the audio box, and in my opinion sounds pretty good. I need to clean it up a bit with some kind of program (EQ, boosting bass, and cleaning up some buzzing), and I was going to do this anyways. I was just wondering if it was appropriate to showcase one's live recordings over studio recordings.

I know...
I just wanted to say that because there's a band here in Chicago that plays more gigs than anyone and they use pre-recorded tracks for a LOT of their backing vocals.
And they suck for that.
