Them: "So where do you stay?"
Me: "There's a Burger King down the street from my house. We can meet there."
Never heard from them again. Always be sensible about these things.

| | | | I was trying to sell a Gibson g****r on OKC Craigslist a few months back. It wasn't really anything fancy but it was an American made gibson. I was asking $600 for it, which is more than reasonable. Some guy emails me and says " I'll give you $200 for it if you'll bring it to me tonight." Same ad I got someone else wanting to trade an entry level yamaha electric for it. Some people either have no sense of value or are just trying to rip you off. |

Derek | I'll wheel and deal all day long. I list with padding for it. I move if people ask, within reason. I draw a line at reasonable amount, and I give a good deal.
But once we've decided on a fair price and committed to meet, the negotiation is OVER. Don't show up with less cash or try to *(&^ me over. |

Around here I guess im the low baller because people seem to think that something is worth 50 bucks less than retail.

| | Coffee is a state of mind. | | Join Date: Oct 2007 Location: Bergen County, New Jersey | | | I avoid CL like the plague. But then again, evilbay is a pain too. I list bold-faced, "no international shipping" and "auctions never end early" - never fails - I always get numerous international shipping rate requests and end early offers.
My favorite was a few years ago - I was selling a Washburn T24 for $350 which was very reasonable. I get the question - "Will you end your auction early?" Now I am already done with this noodle. 2 hours later, same guy: "I'll paypal you $200 right now if you end the auction early." What are you kidding me? This is not the art of wheeling and dealing here, this is the art of stupidity. This is some village's missing idiot.
Auction ended for $450.
Where do they all come from, I ask you??

I always try to bargain down, you have to be an idiot not to try to get something cheaper than is being offered. It is ridiculous to sell something on CL and NOT expect people to haggle.
That being said, I am always reasonable. I keep it within $50 of the price offered, depending on how much it's being offered for. I basically just round down to the closest $50 mark i.e., if they're asking $175, see if they'll go $150.
I always ask if they're still selling it when I email them, and then ask politely if they'd be willing to go down in price any, unless they've specified they're firm on the price.

| | Registered User | | Join Date: Feb 2004 Location: Fort Atkinson, WI | | | I've never tried selling bass gear online (I tend to hang onto my stuff forever, whether I use it or not), but last year I was selling our five year old Mitsubishi HD "big screen" TV. We wanted to scale down and get a new flat panel. I knew it wouldn't bring a lot, but it was a very nice set in great condition. I listed it on craigslist for $500 OBO.
Of course I got a lot of low ball offers for like $200. I had also listed in the same ad the fact that I had a separate digital tuner I would sell for $50. So of course someone e-mailed me and asked "Are you still selling the TV for $50.00???" I said, "No, the asking price on the TV is $500." So she e-mails me back and says "That's pretty deceptive that you had it listed for $50." So I copied and pasted the exact ad from craigslist and e-mailed it back to them, saying "Sorry you were confused."
I got sick of trying to find a buyer on craigslist and dinking around with it, so I finally listed it in the local paper in the classified section, and after only one day of the ad running, I sold it for $400.

| | | | Not a low ball story, so it's a bit OT, but i was about a day from buying a Swollen Pickle for 90 from some guy on Craigs list. I had e-mailed back and forth, told him i just needed a day for the money to get put into my account and i could have it to him.
I e-mailed him to ask if he wanted extra for shipping, and he said "Oh sorry, i already sold it. But here's a link to a make your own site".
I was slightly frustrated. He never even mentioned any other lookers. |

| | Registered User | | Join Date: Jan 2006 Location: Auburn, CA | | | I always leave a bit of haggle room in anything I am selling, 10% or so.
That said, I was selling a Mixer, I had it at around 50% of the original selling price, a good deal and a bit lower than they average on Evilbay. Anyway dude calls me, says he will take it, then says he wants to meet me, and will call me back when he can get a ride to the meeting spot (starbucks). I get a call at 10pm, after I told him to not call after 8pm.
So, since he already woke the wife up, I figured I could meet and just get rid of the thing, so I head down. He did say he would take it, so I am thinking this will not be a haggle. Boy was I wrong. I get there, with the mixer, he says he has the $$$, but then wants to plug in the mixer, but has not headphones, no mics, nothing to test it with, etc. I plug it in, it has one small LED that shows power which works fine, then he proceeds to offer less than half what I was asking. THe mixer was in new shape, I had a huge very detailed pic up on CL and he said this was not the same mixer in the ad. I show him my ad on my blackberry, with the pic that shows the mixer.
I get pissed, tell him he is confused with another ad, because this is the mixer, then he goes in a rap about how he will be sending this to the philippines to his church, and that I should donate it. ***???
I speak a little Tagalog and let him know what he could do with his offer.

Seriously, though. I would pay the $240 for it if it was what I was looking for, the Duncan and extra pickguard are worth the elevated price.
