Maggot Brain: Essential knowledge?

Sign in to disble this ad
Is it essential for bands to know maggot brain? I absolutely refuse Mustang Sally, so my band jams out maggot brain instead.

What are some other songs that are good for bands that have run out of songs early in their set? For jamming, we use maggot brain and Muffin Man. Any others?

no

And why do you absolutely refuse to play *any* song that will A) get folks to dance and B) make you money? I despise Lynard Skynard and that cracker anthem "Sweet Home", but if I'm it's on the set list, and I'm getting paid...

I thought this board was called bass humour? I was joking.

Someone get this guy a hipshot, he's too high strung.

my bad - I didn't see it was in "humor"... There are so many folks asking absurd questions about music on this list that I just assumed...

My thread kind of worked, then. I was trying to blend in!

What are some of the more ridiculous 'Jam' songs you've all seen when you know a band's run out of steam?

My experience is that those tunes you whip up at 1am when your sub guitarist doesn't know the set list are usually dead-simple oldies but goodies (Black magic woman / Jumpin Jack Flash / etc). That's just my experience.

I was in a band, years ago, that featured a drummer with a serious drinking problem who insisted on singing the whole last set to impress his girlfriend - Very bad renditions of old Tom Petty songs were played with suspect meter on those nights...

How can someone -not- know Black Magic woman!?

That's crazy, man. You're crazy.

My opinion....I played that flipping song for ten years, and I'm tired of it. If I have any choice in the matter, I'm playing something else. THere's hundreds of thousands of songs out there that are just as good as Mustang Sally.

As far as FZ songs for jamming... one of the bands I was in had tons of fun with Disco Boy.

Other tunes:

Pick a J. Geils Band tune
Sweet Emotion
Superstition
Spirit in the Sky
Loser
Magic Carpet Ride
Low Rider
Pick a reggae song (assuming your band and audience are copacetic)
