MAJOR FAIL

I attended a clinic put on by Vic Wooten, Anthony Wellington and Steve Bailey about three weeks ago in Myrtle Beach. I was lucky to be chosen as a guinea pig to go up on stage and play (you know - Hey Charles play something, now do this and play it again. Doesn't that sound better?).

Anyway, when I get on stage Vic (yeah, I call him Vic now - that's how I roll) hands me a bass without a strap to play. No problem as there is a stool for me to sit on. Victor Wooten then asks me if I want to play his bass because it has a strap and I say..........wait for it............"Nah, I'm cool". "Nah, I'm cool"???? Are you kidding me? One of the better bass players in the world asks me - on stage in front of a room full of other bass players - if I would like to play his bass and I say "Nah, I'm cool". Un-freakin'-believable!

The clinic was very good and the night wasn't a complete loss as I did get to play Steve's (yeah....) 6 string fretless Jazz afterwards.

Nah, I'm cool,

By the sound of it you were cool . he's just a person and it's just a bass, and you were low maintenance.

Don't worry about it......................it's cool.

Seriously I would put that down to nerves the words probably jumped out your mouth before you even registered what he said to you.

I'm pretty sure I would have said something stupid, like "oh, can I keep it then?"

I wonder if he draws stupid responses from people just because of who he is. When I met him I shock his hand and said I am very glad to meet you Mr. Wooten, I am looking forward to seeing you play tonight. (So far so good ... Right?) Then he asks me, Do you play Bass? And I say .... okay here it is .... "Not like you do!" FACEPALM. He is so humble and down to earth, I don't know if anyone can ever live up to what others think they are or should be. I am just glad that not all famous people are dicks. I want to meet Les Claypool. Cheers.

I wasn't nervous and I'm too old to be bowled over by celebrity. Vic (yeah...) really was cool and I felt completely comfortable. It really was like telling one of my band mates "Nah, I'm cool". It didn't really dawn on me until after the fact that I had turned down the chance to play Vic Wooten's bass.

Nah, I'm cool,

Wow, that was 3 weeks ago and you're just now posting about it? It must have kept you up some nights.

I actually "bumped" into Joe Theisman (spelling?) once. I was so startled that I said, "Hey I saw you break your leg on TV. Did it hurt?"

"Did it hurt?"......it was broken in half, sideways and backwards....and I asked "Did it hurt?"

He said, "yeah, a little" and walked off.

One of the most accomplished quarterbacks in NFL history, and I said, "Hey I saw you break your leg on TV."

Can't get any more stupid than that.

You should have brought your own Bass and said "I'm cool - you wanna try mine?" People within 50 feet of you would have started shivering!!

I ran into Emmit Smith a number of times as a Gator, then while he was a Cowboy. Major jerk.

Nolan Ryan, of the Houston Astros at the time, was a regular at my mom's bakery. I was just a starry eyed little kid, but he was the coolest celebrity athlete EVER. I have roughly 30 grand (appraised after he made Hall of Fame) worth of Nolan Ryan signed memorabilia in my bank deposit box now because every time he came in to the bakery (about two to three times a week), he'd bring me some other signed thing or another, not to mention the things I had that he signed.

He also gave me roughly a week's worth of tickets at the astrodome when they had a 9 or 10 game home stand.

That guy is a real class act.

Did he offer his #1 Yin-Yang Fodera? If so, yeah, fail. You are the Fail-o-Matic 5000. Otherwise, meh. At least you didn't fold again, with Steve's(yeah) bass.

I was waiting for my luggage one night after a late-night flight. Joe Theisman and I were among just a handful of people there. We just stood and talked for about 10 minutes until the luggage came. He was very nice, and not at all arrogant (like a lot of people seem to think he is).

But dang, I forgot to ask him if it hurt when his leg snapped like that... (Sorry, Bluesbreaker! I just couldn't resist.) Seriously though, that was truly a hideous injury to see happen.

I've spent 38 years here in the greater DC area. I wish I had a nickel for every time I've seen the footage of that leg break.

"Did it hurt?" LOL Nice!
